Hey guys, i'm considering using linux on one of my computers, and im just wondering a few things... what distributions  do people think are the best? and what programs would you guys recommend i use? internet browsersm office alternative, antivirus/spyware/adware etc, firewalls etc etc. i really have no idea with linux, but i'm always wanting to find out some new things and im really looking for a change! also how easy is it to take linux off a computer and put windows back on it? probably just a matter of formatting the hard drive?

dual-booting is best using 2 Seperate HDD's. 1 for Windows an other for linux, . Suse10 is becomming a Good Distro now that t uses YUM,  ,  Suse is also Piss easy to setup dualboot or not an can resize partitions etc, i dont know if ubuntu  has a utility in its distro that allows a user to resize aa partition. but for Virus Programs for linux there are some around but dont really need them as its not really a target for a Lot of Viruses unlike Windows, so no you wont need a Virus scanner. an for ofice stuff, use Openoffice or Koffice,

OpenOffice.org is the better of the two, as it's compatible with most MS Office formats. In fact, OpenOIffice.org is so good, I use it on Windows

true, i use it in Windows to, an FC4,  but some prefer koffice  i dont myself

thanx for this guys, keep the ideas coming... what do you think of the Ubuntu distro? i also have the fedora distro on a cd somewhere... what do you guys reckon?

it depends what your comfortable with using. i myself prefer fedora/redhat, but use Both distro's an see what u prefer

If you want to check which you prefere before switching, get VMware and try them all out on your pc through that, then you can see which you prefere then install it properly if you must

i dont think VMWare works to well on FC4, though i might be wrong, i just seen posts in the fedoreforum about it

I prefer Ubuntu personally. It's a Debian based distro, and it uses apt. And yes, Ubuntu has the ability to resize partitions during install.

is there a linux base messenger alternative at all? its not really ne trouble if there's not seeing as though i'll still have a Windows based PC as well, but it'd b easier to use it all on da one computer obviously lol
