they are .dat files, if want to use them u need to renamed them to .gif files
c:\documents and settings\user\application data\microsoft\msn messenger\account number\custom emoticons
*Be sure to turn on show hidden files and folders.

RE: Where are emoticons stored?
With 170 posts I assume you're a regular user of these forums and know the rules (ie search before posting). This is a commonly asked question and there are dozens of threads on the matter. I suggest searching the forums....I believe Cookie has gone in to great detail on this topic.

Ok fair enough.
I did a quick search and found this post from Cookie:

Your DP's, CE's, ...
Your own Display Pics, Custom Emoticons and Backgrounds and other stuff are all stored in your MSN Messenger application data directory. These directories are different from OS to OS and depend on what you're exactly looking for:

Contact's DP's, CE's, ...
The Display Pictures and Custom Emoticons you've recieved from your contacts are stored in your cache in your "Temporary Internet Files"-folder. These are also stored as PNG's. Their filenames are named as CA<6_characters>.BIN.
And this is the exact place where "Display Picture Stealers" will look for the pictures and emoticons of your contacts. So if you delete your temporary internet files then no DP-stealer will find anything because nothing is there to find. For more details see:
CookieRevised's reply to 'How do CE/DP stealers work and do I need them?'

RE: Where are emoticons stored?
Everybody's assuming he means the Custom Emoticons, but he might want to know where the standard emoticons are stored. I think thery're stored in the .exe itself, and you'd need to use something like ResHacker to extract them. But you can also find a list here.
