alright I had this problem and I had much better reponses than these ones
Go to your control panel, and open your mouse settings. Lower your mouse speed, and save. Then try opening a conversation by double clicking. Has this fixed your problem?

Weird, It's like MSN Messenger accelerates the double click speed. I can Double click fine on everything but MSN Messenger. I set it down one notch and now it works. Thanks lou.
