It is easy With the /nick command you can do it although you will probably need to follow the guide to really help you

Can you please explain the steps you are doing in order to try and colour your display name?

Are you entering a space inbetween the command and colour?
Are you typing ctrl-k and selecting the colours?

The following example is a picture of what it should look like when doing it from your conversation window.

have you tried using colornick ??
