WLM tends to do that. I get namechanges too from time to time...
I can't guarantee the following will work (seems to solve crashes too so who knows)...but this will totally clean out the listcache:

Besides this i can only advice a fresh install of WLM..meaning:
- Uninstall
- reboot
- remove folder in program files folder pointing to it
- remove C:\Documents and Settings\<accountname>\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\MSN ID Number
- reinstall
