They don't work this is really hard!

The server is playing up so maybe that is your problem.

what did you put as the host address as I have tried ftp.teaspoondiner.net and teaspoondiner.net.

As I said before, teaspoondiner.net. It sounds like you are doing everything right so it must be a server problem.

so why does loading that in firefox give me a login prompt?

because that's just a way to view the folders on your account =/ you can't upload anything or do anything like that from there
