Yes, in this case they are.
If you think that fullstops are useless for an IM, then so are capital letters. A person does not require a capital letter at the beginning to know that it's the beginning of a sentence. The same way he doesn't need a fullstop at the end to know that it's the end of the sentence.
However, if you wish to be pedantic then you can say that a capital letter AND a fullstop are needed for each IM.
... but you cannot say that one is useless while the other isn't.
