O.P. Don't want to do anything stupid...

I would very much like your advice on installing Windows Vista Beta 2. The issue is, I have a Dell Laptop which comes with no recovery CD, if something should go wrong it would recover from the hard drive. What I would like to know is, if I should install the Vista Beta would it affect the partition with the drivers if not, how could I get the drivers if needed. I don’t want to do anything stupid. Thanks for your help… (Y)

First off, there is no "partition" with the drivers. They're installed with windows. Second, installing vista will, obviously, remove XP.

I am comfused. the thing is, if my computer should crash, this is what is done from the manual.

Using Dell PC Restore by Symantec
Use Dell PC Restore by Symantec only as the last method to restore your operating system. PC
Restore restores your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer.
Any programs or files added since you received your computer—including data files—are
permanently deleted from the hard drive. Data files include documents, spreadsheets, e-mail
messages, digital photos, music files, and so on. If possible, back up all data before using PC
Restore.
NOTICE: Using PC Restore permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any applications

During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.
2 Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.

NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.
3 On the next screen that appears, click Restore.
4 On the next screen, click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
5 When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.
NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.

Trust me, you do not want to use dell restore. Instead, use an XP Disk. Also, what did that have to do with my post? o.o

Finally someone understands. I don't have an XP CD. If it so happens that I need to re-do my system, I would just restart my machine and during boot I would Press CTRL F11 and the system would automatically load XP and other programs from the hidden partition on my hard disk. I do not have any CD's, the only thing that is present is the laptop. Thanks anyway. (Y)

There is in fact a partion that holds a ghost image of the Dell as shipped system. Installing Vista will alter the Dell customized master boot record and the CTRL+F11 functionality can no longer be used (the partition remains unless you specifically removed it.)

Try the dos command line app here to restore the Dell mbr ... http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.htm
