Ok first off, this isnt the usual "Bohoo custom names doesnt work anymore"..

I just got msn live, and had my work and usual msn with more than 300 contacts with custom names...

I have exported the custom names from the old Messenger Plus!... Annoyed with the fact i couldnt import it, i just though "Meh at least i can just open the files in a texteditor and extract all the info from there"... But no, the files when opened are complete gibberish...

So i wondered... Any program or easy way to open the *.pld files from the old Plus! to a viewable textdocument or the like?

No, there is no converter available.

Though, if I have some time I could give the outlines of the file format though. I just don't have it documented like I did for the custom sound files. The format is rather easy once you understand the structure.

Although, for your problem, this wont help at all. Custom contact names are indeed stored in the preferences backup file, but the associated contact's email is still encrypted. So you still wouldn't be able to 'read' it...

What you will see is exact the same thing as if you would export the registry subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Patchou\MsgPlus2\<your MSN addy>\Contacts

Oki, thanks for the answer cookie... Seems like i'll just have to install the old msn on another pc, load the preference files and manually transfe rover all the name...
