O.P. Odd Behavior From iTunes/System.
This has been bugging me since I formatted. After installing iTunes on a completely clean computer, changing tracks is causing odd things to happen.

As you can see from the image there is a small spike in CPU usage and in I/O at each track change, but then there is a huge block of 100% usage and large I/O.

I understand that the small spike is the loading of the track, but why then the huge block which last the same length of time and is the same shape every time?

Another odd thing is that it's not just iTunes that surges, it's "System" too.

(Please ignore the spike in the red box, as this is my antivirus updating.)

Thoughts and help appreciated.

How much RAM do you have? Are you running XP?

It's probably DMA'ing the file into memory, hence why there's mega I/O for a short period of time.

Reinstalled, it still happens. I'm starting to think it's always done this and I've just not noticed before..

Maybe.

Are you running it in the taskbar (the mini-player that appears near the systray)? iTunes tends to "use" a lot of resources when it's in minimode:( it's really quite annoying, my computer is fairly old but I've reconstituted it by a dusting inside and a decent defrag:P

back on topic: I'm monitoring my own itunes now, seems alright for me.

Dr4g0n, do you have any podcasts?

I know that whenever my postcasts get updated, it decides to go to 100% for around 30 seconds and then go down to normal.

Podcasts do it too, but even when they're not updating it still happens. I'll live with it, it doesn't cause any problems I just thought it was odd..
