Yes it does, but they have to make sure they reply within a minute or they wont be able to reply.

It isn't possible with Plus! Live, or a script. Best thing to do is to just ask them Something along the lines of "Have you got the new messenger?"

No script needed, right click on a contact, click "Messenger Plus Features" and click "Contact Information..." and click "Save this image"

Answer 2 is just plain wrong. WLM does not separate contacts based on client version. In fact, WLM never receives that information.
And answer 6 is inaccurate. There's no workaround at all: 'Appear Offline' is exactly that, you appear to be offline. There's no way to tell the difference.
