My .mp3s work on my logitech 5.1 speakers, its not much better because its not ment for it but they do play on all speakers.
Also you can play a movie or something on your PC, the sound is awesome.

RE: 5.1 channel song?
yeah there is a 5.1+ mp3 encoder but it hasn't caught on unfortunately look for DTS CD's they are quite rare i've only ever seen one or two but there are in surround sound, most dvd's are however so yeah try them too.
and just for the record mp3's have always worked on all my sound systems, mono, stereo, 5.1 and now 7.1

If you play stereo on 5.1+ boxes it will just duplicate the stereo to the other boxes, so left and right is still ok, but front and back is the same.
At least that's for me with my Audigy 2, 6.1 System.

RE: 5.1 channel song?
Most soundcards will play sound over at least your 4 surround speakers (and ofcourse your sub). The center speaker doesn't always gets used when playing normal music... somw soundcards will, some wont.
Take a look at your soundcard settings, you should be able to clone the sound from your front speakers to your rear speakers so you get sound from those too.

Its different for every soundcard... take a look at the sound settings in your control panel, and explore the soundmixer (which is also different per soundcard a lot of times)... there should be an option for it somewhere.

RE: 5.1 channel song?
Dont know about pc's but my 5.1 surround sound system gives me a pretty good output considering its plain 2 channel mp3 though obviously 5.1 audio (concerts on dvd's) are way better
If your system has particular settings, it can get an awesome effect even out of a 2 channel (stereo) input
