Okay, just got Windows Live messenger yesterday and so far its been the most usless program ive ever upgraded too. Beside the point, one of my contacts on my messenger opened a conversation saying "omg is that you? ... [then a link]" I clicked on it and it automatically opened etc. Now whenever i log onto WLM it opens up a conversation with all of my contacts saying the same thing. Making it impossible to say sorry etc. Only remedy is turning off the computer.

I have deleted the file i downloaded, and i have run a virus scan. But i know relativly nothing about computers. Any help or pointers ASAP would be much appreciated.

that was a virus, you should try completely uninstalling WLM, deleting the directory, then reinstalling

Problem not solved, I fear it may of affected other parts of the computer aswell. I can perform a better virus scan. Or might it be something to do with messenger plus? Its also happening on Windows Messenger, and other parts of the windows OS have been affected

just by uniunstalling WLM aint gonna remove the virus is it?  he obviously needs to do an in-depth scan on his HDD with maybe a different Virus scanner to detect the virus

You fell victim of the Bropia virus (or one of its variants).

Simply uninstalling and removing the Messenger directory will not remove the virus.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode (very very important!!!) and do a full system scan with a decent anti-virus program.

It is randomly placing such links on the net which quite often spread virusses. This will not happen directly but indirectly as people are getting used to posted/spammed links and don't think twice before they click on it (this is exactly how you got the virus too)...

woohaa so far so good. the virus scan only took 6 and a half hours. But i slept through most of it and its fine.
