DVD+R: A recordable DVD format similar to CD-R in that it is a write-once medium. Backed by Sony, Philips, Yamaha, HP, and others.

In other words.. some companies use DVD+R and others use DVD-R.
DVD-R seems to be the better of the two.

Hope that helps. :)

I seem to come across DVD-R a lot more frequently. I would say it's definatley more widely used

That only and entirly depends on your location.

Both formats are used just as much worldwide.

One thing you need to be sure of before buying your blank DVDs that your DVD burner is compatible with that type of DVD.  A DVD-R burner cannot burn a DVD+R and vice-versa.

Most of the modern DVD burners have support for both types.

When burning dual layers, use Verbatim+R DL only.

RE: Diffrence in DVDs
They are both just record-once DVD disks for a DVD burner/writer. They are meant to behave like regular DVD disks once they are burnt.

The main difference for their their use is that some older set-top DVD players can only read one kind.

There are other technical differences, but the only reason to choose one over the other is if your set-top player or your burner only works with one kind, otherwise just get whatever's cheaper/more available/comes in cool colours ;).

Like CookieRevised stated, they are both used as much as the other; they are designed to achieve the same goal anyway.

linx05 mentioned using Verbatim DVD+R for double layer burning because these disks are usually of high quality, while others are low quality or varying quality.
