what would you recommend?

can i share external hard drives over my wireless network?

are there any advantages or disadvantages?

Internals usually have a higher rpm than a usb one (external) and the externals cost so much more.
Internals are cheap and fast and good if its going to be static inside a pc - not being taken in and out all of the time.
When a external one is for people who have lots of data they need to carry around with them all of the time.
So if you just need it for your pc get a internal one but if you need one to carry around - take to school etc... external.

Yes, I have done that with my dads external 300gb Hard Drive

(Though I don't know why I did not just bring the harddrive upstairs)

I think External would be better, because it can be portable.

But what I would reaaaaally suggest is a External HardDrive Enclosure

My dad has one of these as well.

It is good because all you do is you just pop a normal hard drive into it. And now it is basically...portable

So it can help so it can be a Internal and External at the same time

One disadvantage I would think is you have to buy the harddrive seperatly....

It kinda depends on what you wana use it for. (other than storing data ) E.g are you going to want to take some of the data on there round to a friends or something.

I have an external drive i share with my dad and it's great to just quickly put a few files on there and take it round a friends. Although it is kinda like a glorified usb stick if you use it this way.

Oh and do you have an internal one already or are you using as your main/only HDD?

Well,

First, if this will be a main harddrive (installing a Operating System on)

Then switch the Jumper on the harddrive to master

if it will just hold data or install programs etc.

Set to Slave on the jumper.

It should show how to do the jumper stuff on the harddrive itself

jumper? the ide cable?

ive got a hard drive with windows xp already....  im just running out of room. (so im buying an extra drive)

so what would i have to do for that. plug and play lol

You just have to set it to slave like Sam said but when you buy it the  manual should reveal all.

ok i take it you mean set it to slave in the bios? im a complete newb with hard drives...

and ram, do i need to access bios for upgrading it? because my computer has a password on the bios and i dont know it

RAM, I'm pretty sure you just plug it in(it's a kind of unclip this clip that back in job ) and turn your computer on and Windows should recognize it.

Make sure to wear an earth band when installing it though.
