so i got realtek drivers for vista x64 and now system correctly identifies i have 7.1 and testing speakers confirms they all work.

Yet Media Player/Media Center both refuse to play in 7.1 instead its only front stereo

any ideas?

Mind setting a more clear title?
Vista 7.1 implies Vista v7.1 which doesn't exist

Did Windows Media Player ever play in 7.1? IIRC WMP only does stereo.

dunno i always used to use itunes but i'm still awaiting the vista update from apple

seems odd that it makes me customise the options in WMC for 7.1 but not actually plays in 7.1

WMP doesn't need to know how many speakers there are, only the soundcard driver does. So, if you only ever play stereo in WMP, you'll only hear stereo on your 7.1 setup.

Try a DVD with a 5.1 audio track, see if more speakers get used then.

no WMP doesn't but WMC does have speaker setup options, i'll try a dvd, seems odd that it doesn't 'upmix' the track

playing a dvd kicked in the back speakers by the way, its a big shame that it doesn't upmix audio files to output through all L and R channels

Yeah, WMP doesn't upmix. Unless there's some sort of plugin to do that i guess you're stuck! =[
