It seems to be the case, that once my chat logs reach the size of 1,056kb, they become corrupt and fill up with Chinese characters (see images). Plus! will then create a new log for the contact, in the name of "xxxxxx@hotmail.com (2)", and if the need for a third arises, "xxxxxx@hotmail.com (3)" and so on.

Sorry if this is a repost, I've done several search and couldn't find anything similar.

so that actually happens for any file that's bigger than about 1Mb?

That pretty sums it up, in this picture, the two logs I've high-lighted with red give me the bug.

So for whatever reason, it appears to occur at exactly 1,056kb.

This doesn't happen for me however I use encryption (i have used the highest level in the past and the lowest level currently wihout this problem).  It may be a problem with the unencrypted chat logs possibly?

I'll try encryption, and wait until a log gets to the problematic file-size to see if it also occurs.

It is just an idea, I don't know if it will work or not, but it may be a possible solution.  I would like to personally see someone who doesn't encrypt their logs to see if they have this problem or not.

Encryption has solved this mysterious bug, as I now have several chat-logs that are above the 1,056kb threshold that now work fine.

I'm glad to hear that it worked, now we just need someone to confirm the same problem happens to them when they do not have encryption so Patchou knows that it wasn't a once off problem.  Thank you very much for reporting back as well, it's very nice to hear the good news.

I have chat logs that are up to 5MB that don't corrupt... sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I am NOT using any encryption except for December (I don't know why it has encryption, I've never used it. And I can't access the file now ).

My chat logs are not encrypted and I can confirm I never had this problem (Windows Xp Home and Pro),
