O.P. WLM 8.5 Beta installation problem
Windows Live Messenger 8.5 Beta Doesn't seem to want to install. I've tried un-installing plus! and nothing happened. I've tried re-installing 8.1, and un-installing again, but still no luck. The installer seems to "close" after the "Preparing your computer for installation" dialogue appears for about 7 seconds.
OS: Windows vista Ultimate
Any help?

RE: WLM 8.5 Beta installation problem
If you installed any other of the new beta you need to make sure they are all in the same language (f.e. if you got Live Mail in EN-US then Messenger in EN-GB will not install...nothin will happen after the preparing screen).
Also have a look at Liveside.net - Windows Live Installer problems? Try this
(my guess is you got leftovers from using the leaked build)

RE: WLM 8.5 Beta installation problem
Well thats not the right way to do it
quote: 0. Ignore what's on LiveSide, deleting files is never a good idea.
1. Remove all new Live setup-based products, if you managed to get any installed.
2. Attempt installation of Live setup-based product (i.e. Messenger)
3. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\WLInstaller
(replacing C with your root drive letter)
4. Locate/open latest log file.
5. Search for "entering maintenance mode". If you find something similar to the following, you're affected, otherwise stop.
SI (s) (9C:DC) [23:01:39:620]: Product registered: entering maintenance mode
6. Beginning at the top of the file again, search for "Original package ==>".
7. Take note of the package, including its full path, after the ==>.
(example: C:\Windows\Installer\28cc0b.msi)
8. Close the log file, click Start, Run and issue the following command:
msiexec /x <path>
(example: msiexec /x C:\Windows\Installer\28cc0b.msi)
9. Acknowledge any prompts and the Windows Live installer (from any previous build) will be uninstalled properly. No reboot required.
10. Dance around!

Well it is for most and on top of that easiest way to go. If that fails one can always go to the more comptech way of doing it

Thanks for that Sunshine... I'd already deleted the folder in \Software (that's my \Program Files) and all pertaining registry entries, but I hadn't guessed there'd be installer files in application data.
You're a star!

I've tried those lines, but none of them work. However, I get an error.
I've tried searching on the code, but it gives me errors about Windows Update. Is it failing because it can't add the windows live products to a list, or what?

Those lines are meant for people where the installer just disappears without error or completing the install.
Maybe you are missing something that you should get from Windows Update? Just a wild guess tho.
