I have a contact that if is offline, have the telephone icon, so I think that if you are offline, you can receive message and answer. But I don't know if you can send the first message to a contact, because I cannot sign me on the service (italian operators don't appear in the list)
you can set up ur phone to recieve messages as sms, like angeldevil said. or you could get WLM Java apps for mobile phones (disable javascript before clicking cuz it'll redirect to main page)
