Windows and Windows Live Messenger (by Microsoft) are only compatible with Windows Live IDs and Yahoo! users.

There are however, third-party Messenger programs which allow you to  do so though. Trillian and Pidgin are a few examples.

You dont need to 'add' your Hotmail account. Simply download and install Plus! from http://www.msgpluslive.net/download/ and Plus! will automatically run when WLM is run.
