O.P. Playstation 3 online

Greetings all. i've been stuck with this question for a while and thought if any people would know the answer it would be you brainy lot.

Here's the problem. Got a playstation 3 the other day. lovely console and grand theft auto is immense. That's not the issue here though obviously.

My bedroom is mega small but i've got a perfect combination. Computer with modem next to the television with the playstation 3. I thought connecting the ps3 to the internet would be easy.

However i don't have wireless internet. I have a modem with a usb connector to the computer. Firstly the ps3 needs an ethernet connector which obviously i don't have. Secondly i've been told i can't make a wireless network with a broadband connection running through a usb.

So my questions are)

1) How can i get my playstation 3 online?
2) Is there anyway to make a wireless network with a usb based connection?

I'm on virgin media (formely the mighty blueyonder) with a motorola surfboard cable modem sb5100

Here's some helpful pictures i found of my useless modem.

Many thanks if anyone can help.

You could buy an Wireless Access Point and connect that to the Ethernet connection on the modem.

However I don't know if the USB connection and Ethernet connection are usable at the same time. If not, then you will need to buy a router. Then I suggest to buy a wireless router, this way you will be able to connect multiple devices on the internet with cable and without.

You should be able to plug the PS3 directly into your PC using an ethernet cable (the PS3 should come with one - I would hope) and bridge the connection (not sure about the terminology) allowing your PlayStation to access the internet via your PC, this would however require your PC to be on whenever you try to connect to PSN.

This wouldn't require you to buy a router, wireless or otherwise.

I would advise buying a multipc modem.
The usbmodems are really old and normally only used in combination with ADSL1 or old Cable connections.
You probalby can get a new multipc modem if you renew your internet connection with Virgin.
Usb to ethernet routers usely are expensive and give problems.

Thanks for all the answers you lot. Something for me to work with for sure. Because there's a space on the modem for an ethernet wire do i think i could buy an ethernet cable and use that and simply replace the usb wire?

Connect the modem to the PC via Ethernet (unplug the USB first). If the PC can get on the Internet via the modem in this case, then it's more than likely the PS3 will be able to as well.

no, you can't. both have individual mac addresses and you need to contact your ISP, the can probably make the change.

(I have the same modem)

I have the exact same connection as you. I brought a wireless Netgear router and an Ethernet cable and was able to do things fine. In your modem you can only use either the USB connection or Ethernet cable, but use Ethernet as it's faster and has no driver issues :).

They only cost a couple of pounds, buy them cheap from Amazon ;).
