O.P. COMPAQ Presario CQ60 Only Turing On When Heated Up
Hey,
I have a COMPAQ Presario CQ60. The thing is, when I turn it on all that happens is the lights turn on, nothing else, no screen, nothing. If I leave it like this for 10-30 mins it heats up.
Once it has heated up it will turn on fine.
So, for some reason it only boots up when it has been running for a while to heat up.
I checked the ram and hdd and did various tests and they are both fine.
Without the battery in it does the same.
Any ideas?

Aren't you still under warranty? As far as I remember CQ60s are not that old. If you are, just call HP and explain the issue.
Also, why do all of your computers just seem to be plain weird? :\

I didn't think computers or laptops had to be 'heated up' to work?
I thought the idea was to keep them cool, hence the fans and various other additional cooling methods.

sounds like something similar that has happened to an old Athlon board that I have. I'm not sure of the exact cause, but I believe a capacitor is failing on the mainboard. Whenever power is connected (plugged in, but not powerd on) there is a high picthed whine sound.
I cannot hear you. There is a banana in my ear.

Sounds possible, the capacitor may have to fully charge for the rest of the board to work properly. If it's damaged it'll take longer to charge/turn on the rest of the systems

When I plugged in the adapter I used one of those screwdrivers and there IS current around the whole system.

Do you have anything plugged into the usb (any port), beacuse I had like a mouse plugged in or somthing and the lights would turn on but not the screen and it wouldn't boot, so I just unplugged it from the computer and it booted fine, then when I was in it was fine.

:wtf: :slap:
You do not use " one of those screwdrivers" to check if there is current. Current is not voltage. Second, having voltage or current does not automatically mean the voltage or current is correct. Third, there is a difference between AC and DC. Fourth, some of such screwdrives are just continuity testers and shouldn't be used for anything else (other than screwing).
For proper checking you use a decent voltage/current meter.
Also, I hope you did not mean you started to poke around various contacts on the main board with that screwdriver to check if there is some 'juice' on the board.
Like I and others have said before, leave the electrical checking up to a qualified person!.

Does the above answer your question?

How did you void your warranty?
