I purchased an HD webcam to try with the new Windows Live Messenger beta. Though I find it great so far. I was wondering if it increases the bandwidth usage compared to a regular video call. Or does Microsoft have a clever technique or method that makes the calling more efficient than one would think?

A HD webcam will almost certainly use more bandwidth than a regular webcam, much in the same way that HD YouTube uses more bandwidth than regular.
