Is it possible really? Or was it wanted at one time when Plus! Live is being programmed and written to the website and afterwards either it was given up or forgotten?

This can't be done, it could be in the old versions (for messenger 7.5) and so the site was probably just not updated.

As deAd said this is not possible at this present time, though I hope that it does become possible soon because I did find it a very useful feature as it made grouping the chats easier so you could keep a track of things (though the way yahoo messenger does its new tab stuff is REALLY nice, the old way of plus was still considerably good).
