It does in fact go into standby because on my Win XP machine it says : "Preparing to go into standy-by." When I plug it into my Win Vista machine, it does the same thing when you press the red power icon in the start menu.

I tried the removing codecs but the problem still happens. I've noticed now that it happens on the internal drives and not just the external one. It only happens with folders with videos files in them.

I had that problem on my external hard drive. What I did was run chkdsk /f/r <letter of drive> (example chkdsk /f/r C: ), and it made the file accessible.
