RE: Downloading SP2 I'm also sure there's software out there for removing WGA, which is probably what is causing the problem [it did when I was using XP]. | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-22-2007 at 09:32 PM |
RE: Vista Administrator Account (revealed) Nothing. The difference is that Vista doesn't let people run as admin by default. This is the default behaviour of most operating systems, and those operating systems usually have mechanisms for doing more privileged things that are fairly straight... | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-22-2007 at 09:30 PM |
RE: messenger for linux? Anyway, Gaim supports the most important Plus! feature: longer messages. I just probed it and it fails at 2k characters. | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-21-2007 at 07:34 PM |
RE: messenger for linux? A good messenger client that supports Plus! tags? That'd be fantastic. Gaim sure needs desktop contacts, I agree. I used to be unsure about Gaim, but I like it now. I don't know what Terillian is like these days, but it was a bit rude when I used i... | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-21-2007 at 03:15 PM |
RE: gaim integration / msg+ protocol Correct- it requires a running MS TCP/IP stack if I'm not mistaken, therefore win32 API [such as wine] is not enough, you need a full Windows instance running. Thanks heaps though Cookie- that's nice and easy. | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-21-2007 at 11:55 AM |
RE: gaim integration / msg+ protocol Not really, a VM will work just fine. | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 04:38 PM |
RE: Bigger Bulky monitor or smaller LCD? Cookie: or when the screen is of a considerable size. In contract jobs where you need significant screen real estate, you try carrying around a couple of 21"+ CRT screens every few weeks/months. Still, none of that is applicable here. It's the user... | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 02:10 PM |

RE: Bigger Bulky monitor or smaller LCD? I'd suggest the LCD, though I tend to think 17" is tiny anyway. I picked up my 19" LCD for AU$250, if you're looking to get one they aren't too much and I think the colour is better on my LCD than any CRT I've used in a home setup before. Is th... | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 01:30 PM |

RE: [Help!] Startup Problems I had some horrible persistent malware once, ETremover can be good for that stuff. Otherwise, I'm out of ideas [beyond "hey, they're giving away Ubuntu CDs now, might be worth the effort".] | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 08:17 AM |
RE: [Help!] Startup Problems Heh, do you remember what those files were? You might be able to replace them by hand, assuming you know someone who has a working OS the same version as yours. | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 07:57 AM |
RE: [Help!] Startup Problems Yuck! If you have a system restore setup [2k onwards you probably do] it might be worth a try. If you press f8 before Windows gets to the graphical loading bar, you should be able to get to the system restore menu. Otherwise it's probably a registry... | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 07:16 AM |
RE: Volume is gone What brand laptop? Have you tried the headphones? And yeah probably check the device manager too to make sure there's no addressing problems. | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 07:07 AM |
RE: bgsvcgen.exe? Haha- I find mine large and unwieldy- some programs make it a complete pigsty. I assume I'm not the only one who isn't prepared to go searching for references to rude daemons in there. | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 06:57 AM |
RE: *Free* Partition Manager [SOLVED] You will probably need to find someone who can burn it for you. The liveCD should recognise those files when it boots- but it needs to boot, rather than Windows. I doubt it's trivial to boot to an .iso without burning it from Windows, but I have no... | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 06:52 AM |
RE: Volume is gone There's a lot of point of failures there. You're using windows? Make sure you're in the playback settings not the recorder settings. Have you tried all different programs that make sound [ie, it's not just your program]? Some computers have hardw... | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 06:43 AM |
RE: lots of help needed system rebuild I think on newer mother boards you need to specify which bus the graphics card is on if not the default. If you're using an older card, it might not be pci-e [or whatever is the latest?], and the motherboard might still be broadcasting VGA on pci-e. | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 06:38 AM |
RE: gaim integration / msg+ protocol It's not how Plus! interfaces to messenger that's the thing- more how Plus! extends the messenger API. For example, what actually gets sent when trying to execute a change of font colour or /me. | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-20-2007 at 06:31 AM |
RE: bgsvcgen.exe? Playing with the registry is not for the feint of heart. Besides, it's pretty hard to navigate. I've found a tool called Regcleaner handy, it's free to download and there's no malware that comes with it, at least, from memory. It groups automatic... | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-19-2007 at 10:03 AM |
RE: New PC Build No way, especially with Vista. If you're using Vista on a 32 bit machine especially- with 4GB you can almost stop it thrashing and caching it's brains out :D Well, that said, I don't know what you will be using it for so there's a chance you wil... | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-19-2007 at 09:21 AM |
gaim integration / msg+ protocol Hey! I was a very happy Messenger Plus user for many years. Whenever I sat down at a machine without Messenger Plus, I found it too awkward to use. Anyway, I've a reasonably old machine, so much so that newer msns consume too many cycles somehow to ... | Verte | Tech Talk | 04-19-2007 at 09:12 AM |
