RE: Which actually HURTS?
You don't usually have one without the other. Given that contact resistance is pretty much always in a certain range, or better yet, negating contact resistance and measuring from within the skin, you get pretty much ohmic behaviour, ie, a constant ...

RE: They exist: I've got a trojan...
I have never formatted a machine [except when installing a new operating system with a different root file system type] but I guess it can't be too bad to start fresh sometimes. Of course, you gloss over the possibility of BIOS-resident malware :) ...

RE: install ubuntu from USB drive by floppy
Curious. There's no point in having a swappable bay if you can only have the one thing in there. I've a T20, and the DVD-ROM works fine.

RE: install ubuntu from USB drive by floppy
If you lived closer, I'd lend you my CD drive :) If those are too much work, a netboot might work. I'm sure Ubuntu has the option. My first GNU/Linux install was from http://goodbye-microsoft.com/, as long as you have Windows on the thinkpad and a ...

RE: Firewall in my university!!
Awesomeness. Again with the torrents though, it's pretty pointless if you want to take advantage of your schools bandwidth, it will actually use yours up twice as fast, if you get charged for uploads.

RE: SetPoint - Do I need it?
I'm pretty sure it isn't. I get annoyed when software [especially driver software for hardware I've paid for] is stupid and they won't let me fix it. That said, it looks like setpoint is somewhat malleable :) the config is held in xml files. Wor...

RE: Firewall in my university!!
Ah, well the sort of work around I was picturing would have another machine acting as a proxy. That would slow torrents right down, in fact, it would be easier, cheaper [really] and faster just to use your home machine directly for that. I don't mea...

RE: Firewall in my university!!
Possibly. Where's xen0h when you need him? Software.. maybe. If you have another machine set up somewhere and you can communicate with it over port 80, it can't be too hard to use that as a gateway. There has got to be software that lets you do th...

Can't you comment that part out and recompile? ;)

RE: My computer is making too much noise.
Just saw [URL=http://www.orthogonalthought.com/blog/index.p hp/2007/09/intel-speedstep-windows-xp-and-confusin g-power-profiles/]this[/URL] on slashdot. I honestly don't know if Intel's desktop processors include frequency throttling or if many chips...

RE: Firefox needs to close =S
Are there any pages in particular that crash your browser every time? Could be plugin or Javascript related. If you've got noscript, toggle some permissions.

RE: Need Help!
Do you remember what you deleted? Do you have a LiveCD of some sort or another computer you can stick this hard drive in to poke around on it?

RE: Need Help!
Ah, the fabled c00021a, upset Gina. I was sure we'd discussed this before on here but I couldn't find it. Maybe booting from some kind of LiveCD, you could check out NTUser.dat and the Gina & domain controller related .dlls. Still, it's a wonder W...

RE: Visual C++ 6.0 DLLs
I don't see why. You can write C programs that export functions with __stdcall calling conventions.

bios failing mid way through [fixed?]
The background: I have an IBM Thinkpad T20. Last night I made the decision to go GNU. I felt like starting afresh, so I formatted my whole hard drive, made GNU partitions [/ and swap], and some new ones for FreeBSD and MINIX. Installing the GNU went ...

RE: Uni Internet?
I remember a story a while back about the RIAA making a large USA university turn over their logs, so it could litigate the students. I don't think you'd be out of their reach, either. Your school might have a gripe if you start to eat too much of ...

RE: Toshiba M70 - 340 battery not charging
The A70s were notorious for the solder between the power connection and the motherboard fracturing, it wouldn't surprise me if your M70 was suffering from a similar ailment. If your laptop is still under warranty, get that looked at, otherwise, ther...

RE: Need a program to scan and save all names of files in a certain folder
There is probably an easier way using some kind of posix features, but I'm not that smart. So, here's some Python. import os output = open("output.txt",'a') filenames = os.listdir("C:\\directory\\you\\want\\to \list\\") for file ...

IIRC, that file also appears in /windows/inf, after a stock standard installation.

RE: computer problems
Interesting. I think we've all had similar lag at some point, but for different reasons. The last time I recall significant clunkyness, I was using ZoneAlarm on XP, on a fairly dated laptop. Disabling AV and killing any orphaned or pointless process...

RE: Keyboard and Mouse?
The num pad is pretty fast. I think I'd be at a bit of a loss if I were doing data entry or something. Otherwise, that you've got to take your hand off the home position to use them makes up for that speed, if you're inputing both text and number...

RE: Keyboard and Mouse?
A lot of dashslotters seem to rave about those Kensington expert mice. Their trackballs look nice too. I think they are pricey, though. I think my modes of preference have typically gone tablet > thinkpad clitmouse > trackball [esp. for FPS] > anythi...
