RE: Help! Restore Bootloader
SGD has a menu option for "fixing windows boot"- that will restore ntldr etc, and not give you the option of booting into Ubuntu. Anyway, GRUB is surprisingly easy to fix. Hang on a second. EDIT: using the live CD, can you get to boot/grub/menu.lst...

RE: computer tv hook up situation
I don't mean to sound silly, but have you tried just connecting one?

RE: "Network Cable Unplugged"
IIRC, wireless connections don't require cables. What is going on?!

RE: Building a Media PC / Network storage
Oh, I agree, it kind of feels bad. If you were putting together a system for general use, or especially one for gaming or something, VIA are out. But, it seems Veggie is in share accommodation. Don't really know about their experiences, but if it's...

RE: Building a Media PC / Network storage
Um, passive cooling? :) plus the power usage and form factor bonuses, I guess.

RE: Building a Media PC / Network storage
Passive cooling ;) Besides, do you really need a C2D for a Media PC?

RE: [Urgent] I/O operation failed
:( well I would suggest: Gain root access somehow. If you can't log in as administrator, find a BartPE or GNU/Linux live CD. Check /Documents and Settings/you/NTUSER.DAT. If you have a copy somewhere, eg /Documents and Settings/Default User, try cop...

RE: Text editor color schemes
Sometimes, it's surprising how much difference turning the brightness down makes. I like the default gedit colours, though I use emacs. White background, black text [AT LEAST 14 pt- it makes a real difference, try it! If you've got the screen real ...

RE: What happens when I put me laptop to sleep?
If this sort of stuff interests you, you should take a look at Coyotos, which we're hoping to get the Hurd running on soon. It's pretty much persistent, which means you can pull the plug on your machine, plug it back in, and it would be like nothin...

RE: [Urgent] I/O operation failed
Have you tried restarting again? It might be a bad sector, I'm not sure what you do with those in Windows, but google might help :P

RE: What happens when I put me laptop to sleep?
Even then it will be fine- try it! If your computer is suspended to ram and it runs low on battery, it will actually shut itself down properly [at least, most operating systems do- or they suspend to disk].

RE: Javascript Page Loading???
Words, such as "It, be, within, fair, use", were all used in my post, and are copyright. That's pretty much the basis of his argument. EDIT: and if the sarcasm wasn't obvious, no, giving an element an ID and calling hide on it is not copyright. B...

RE: Messenger Plus compatible with Gamepe?
I believe some features may be compatible and some may not. I haven't the ability to check myself, but I believe a lot of the rendering and text substitution may work [/me and user defined commands], but the GUI stuff probably shouldn't [such as co...

RE: DirectX 10.1
I'd think it was more the last DX that was underspecified. When you leave wriggling room in a standard, you can't expect certain features to be there. I think we should take a lesson from the first revisions of OpenGL- that specified a certain mini...

RE: Gmail hacked over WiFi HotSpot
I bet it's possible to secure yourself by encrypting all your IP traffic, though you will need a way to decrypt it at the server end. And you know, I bet TOR would work most of the time.

That should work, but if it doesn't, open up my computer and press the backspace key, that will definitely get you there. I only say this because for some reason, the desktop on this machine is C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Jokes\Desktop....

RE: Vista over Ubuntu
Well, there are plenty of firewalls that do work on Vista, I'm sure there are recent threads on this. Besides, Vista support is being added fairly quickly now- I'm not sure any major AV provider doesn't support it now. Been hearing good things abo...

RE: Vista over Ubuntu
This is sillyness. Sure, it will be a little more resilient to intentional hacks directed at the OS through HTTP. However, most exploits work through applications and dynamic web content, which you will still be running in Windows I presume. I don't...

No no :) http://imdb.com/title/tt0114369/ Are they 50 million new lines? :) Anyway, that's what, 10000 lines per developer? restricted to SMOP that'd be threeish months work [of course, there's a lot more than a simple matter of programming, beca...

RE: new windows os - and no not vista!
Slashdot were calling it Windows Se7en. I don't think it will be that kind of horror story- I actually do think they will deliver much of the nice things we were promised for Vista. But, time will tell.
