Edit: Also see Menthix's collection </dodgy edit>

Well... the forums are as dead as they can get, so i finally decided to release some of the crap i've been accumulating for over 10 years :zippy:.

But first, i gotta take you back to the past. At some point way back at the beginning, i started taking screenshots of every little thing i found interesting about the forums, or saving attached files that were funny or worth saving at all. I don't know why, i just thought it was cool to be able to refer to my screenshots when i needed proof about something.

Anyway, over two years ago (time flies!), i started the  "Random pic of the day" thread, where i shared random pictures from my "Messenger Plus! forums" folder. Today, im sharing everything. Every image, mp3, thread, etc. i've saved for the past 10 years (related to the forums) is here, a few things aside. i DID go through every single file, checking if it had to be "censored". That means that i deleted a few files here and there that was simply "private" (things i didn't want you to see or know about :P). Still, it is possible that a few "private" files are still there and i just didn't notice them, so yeah... if you see something you shouldn't be seeing, just keep it to yourself :zippy:. You can ask me privately and i'll be happy to tell you the story like a fine grandpa :chroppy:. Most of the emails were originally removed from the images, but some of them are still in there (i mean, in MSN screenshots, for instance). if yours is in there... i'm sorry! lol

Another thing to point out is that i used a software to convert MANY bmps into PNGs (don't ask why i saved many of the files in BMP, makes no sense :P). i say this in case you find an image that doesn't work or whatever.

So... what will you find?
  1. A lot of the forum's history
  2. A lot of behind-the-scenes stuff.
  3. Videos/pictures of sonicsam, marissa, matty, Joa (she asked me to edit the post and add her in here, so there you go Joa :chrongue:), etc. etc... and the good old "traxor.avi" (which was renamed but you can still find it easily lol)
  4. Voice acting, members recording themselves saying crazy things...
  5. avatars and signatures that started trends (like everyone making their own version of my sig).
  6. Pictures from different Plus! meetings
  7. And more!

Note that most of the files are pointless or not worth it, and you'd have to spend a whole evening to go through everything, let alone READ everything, because there's a lot of text in there. Also, I deliberately kept some of the threads from private forums in there, to make it more fun for whoever decides to check this out. Don't worry cookie, it's just a few threads ;). So you might see me and surfi going nuts about silly things and such :P. Also note that, "sadly", the folder is a complete mess that only i can understand, and most of the filenames are in spanish.

So here it is: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8nzg2dirjzl4v5p/MsgPlus_forums.rar

Mirrors:
http://shoutbox.menthix.net/files/MsgPlus_forums.rar
https://rnd.menthix.net/mpl_mirror/history/MsgPlus_forums.rar

it's 800MB, don't complain.

Have fun!

PS: im not sure how dropbox works so if you find that the link doesnt work or something, let me know :P
PPS: Please excuse the old screenshots, some of them are really bad quality. Also, in the older stuff i use windows 98/2000 which looks horrible :p
PPPS: Many of the gifs are animated, so view with the proper image viewer :p The swf files can be opened with your browser :P

\threads\scam.htm

hahaha, that brings back some memories. And a good story too...
Something nobody else knows (well now you know) is that the creator of that scam actually contacted me a few time by email, and then a few years later by phone!

One day I recieved a random strange phone call from him requesting to finally remove his name from all those posts etc because: "he was in seach for a new job and he didn't wanted his new potential boss to find out what he did".

The requests went from cold hard threating ("blahblah or else I do this and that to you, I found out where you live, I'm that good!!!".... me: "wow, nice, my address can be found in public posts, congratz in finding out! ps: I know where you live too"....him: <silence for a while>) to pathetic plees (I could swear he was actually sobbing) "oh pretty pretty please, I'm so not going to find a new job now, if you could only please remove my name and all that info from there, please please, I ask you nicely, I know what I did was wrong, etc etc blahblah and sob sob sob"... to threating again. I think he actually tried to bribe me too at one point.

He also explained (more like trying to find an excuse if you ask me) that his friend used his computer without him knowing it (hence why his name would be in the file properties) to write the thing. And that he only recorded a video for it and didn't actually participated in making the thing. However, minutes later he contradicted that while trying to find another excuse. The gold was when he said he mailed me a link to a "respectable" forum so I could see for myself that he was not the script kiddie we portrayed him to be in that msgplus thread..... the forum was a hackers forum with all kinds of (messenger) malware where many programs had his name as 'creator' and it appeared that he was a very active elite member if not mod of that forum!... so roflol...

It's such a pity I don't have a record of that phone call.
(note: he called me from another country, so I was also trying to string him along, making this a very expensive phone call for him... in the end I think it was nearly an hour I had him on the phone).

RAR: not so easy or quick if it is a long pwd. But luckily they aren't RARs.

ZIP: depends on the contents. In this case it was dead easy and super-fast because of how ZIP encrypts its stuff (weakness in its standard encryption algorithm)...

Bruteforcing might still take a very long time, even on todays PCs, depending on the length of password, so that is out of the question, but in this case you can use an almost instant "known plain-text" attack.

Now, I cba to upload the archives somewhere, so here instructions to decrypt them using AZPR:
(note: only the registered version will fully decrypt the archives)

And to keep with tradition, for old time sake and for what it's worth, below a lengthy post explaining how I came up with those key numbers ;-) :p

Spoiler:

So in this case we're in luck:
There are 2 files in there (the UNLHA32 library files) which is a third party component they used and as such might be found on the internet if we're lucky (and we are).

The point here is that if you have access to an original unencrypted file which is encrypted in the zip, chances are extremely high that you can use the "plain-text" attack. AZPR from ElcomSoft can do such an attack.

So.... Googling for that library and you'll find a few versions. But if you wanna use a "plain-text" attack you need to find the exact same files which are in the encrypted archive. So, I downloaded many versions and started to compare the CRC32 checksums of them with the one used in the archive.

Most versions I found immediately (on the original homepage of UNLHA32) weren't the right ones (all newer versions).
So I Googled a bit deeper and found two older ones in some obscure corner of the net.
It turned out they used version 1.47.1.7 of the UNLHA32.DLL library.

But there is a problem:
For the "plain-text" attack to be effective you need to zip the original file with the _exact_ same zipping method (no problem there, the method can be looked up in the encrypted file attributes..."deflating" was used), but also with the _same_ program! This because many programs use all slightly different compression dictionaries and trees and thus the compressed files are slightly different too!

After trying a few different zip programs I already had installed (except winzip), I always ended up with a slightly wrong dictionary tree. So I gave up on that (cba to download and try more zip programs because it was already too late...yawn)....

Then I Googled for the documentation text file (UNLHA32.TXT) of version 1.47.1.7. Luckily I found it (same CRC32 as the one in the encrypted archive).
I tried to zip that (simply using Windows build-in zipper), and it came out exactly as what was needed (compressed size 12 bytes smaller than its encrypted counter part which means it is a potential match)

So, all what needed to be done now was to load up AZPR,
- select the encrypted archive (1)
- select the "plain-text" attack (2)
- select the normal unencrypted zip with UNLHA32.TXT in it ("plain-text path")
- press start button

40 seconds later: "Encryption keys successfully recovered"

Then:
- save the unencrypted archive
- select the second encrypted archive (assuming the used password is the same... it was... if it wasn't I could have done another new "plain-text" attack since UNLHA32.TXT is also in the second encrypted archive)
- by now the found encrypted keys are saved in their respective boxes (3), so all you need to do now is press the "decrypt zip using encryption keys" button (4)
- save the second unencrypted archive

done

;-)

Have a collection of my own too. Filtered out the duplicates and organized it a bit. Don't be fooled, it is still a maze of folders and meaningless filenames, but some people may enjoy it. My collection adds up to almost 600MB, that is excluding files which were already in Chrono's collection. Only checked for duplicates by checksum (found about 400), you will probably still find many duplicates because of other file formats, stuff being zipped, etc.

Most of it are graphics of some kind: Lots of screenshots, photos, emoticons. But also official wallpapers, DPs, banners. Photos of several meetings. Never released GFD prototypes of the Messenger Plus! Live logo. People loosing their mind in the shoutbox. Messenger Plus' appearance in a legit music video. The original patate spears video. Yuna stuff stashed away in their own folders. Patchou's secret history as a software cracker. Old site screenshots dating back to patchou.com/msgplus. Interviews and articles around several MSN add-ons. Traxor's male model career. Possible references to uber secret beta and private forum sections... :ah:

There are also some saved threads/pages as HTML. Unfortunately those don't age well, many of those refer to images or CSS files on the internet which have been gone for ages. Don't expect the HTML pages to load well, but the text should be there in most cases.

The download is 557MB and extracts to about 593MB.

Again, this is supposed to supplement Chrono's dump. Although I did have some of the stuff, I left it out if it was already in Chrono's rar.

At the current state, when whoever controls the forums server stops paying the bills, I think. I haven't seen any Yuna activity recently.

EDIT: And no, the domain does not work for me at all :(

EDIT2: Strange, using my ISP's DNS and works, but with Google's it does not. (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) - so I guess this is the problem... DNS not resolving from Google and maybe other DNS servers?

EDIT3: With Google's DNS not even menthix.net works.
RE: Download a bit of the forums' history right here by Menthix on 08-21-2013 at 09:35 AM

Interesting, thanks!

EDIT: It should be working again. Name.com was doing something wrong which caused Google DNS to fail DNSSEC validation and refuse to serve the site.
