a good 1 i used to use was www.domaindlx.com

unlimited bandwith, 100mb space, webupload, no adds or pop ups. very easy to sign up to.
doesnt suport php or mySQL though.. but its worth a try.

I highly Suggest Geocites it's very Useful as It has HTML spots Too put which Many Websites Do not Have

I use Zer0host.  Their plans are absolutely amazing.  The only catch is that you have to post 50 posts that aren't spam (human moderators...they can tell) in their forums. 

Basic Plan comes with 100 MB of space, 1 GB bandwidth, PHP, CGI, Perl, 10 MySQL, 10 PostgreSQL, 10 FTP, 10 Email...well, there's a ton of stuff.  I'm not going to list it all. 

There are three other plans as well. Advanced Plan gives you 250 MB and 2.5 GB bandwidth, as well as 20 of the things that were 10 in the basic plan.  Gold plan is 500 MB, 5 (or 10...can't remember...) GB bandwidth, and 30 of all the things that were 10 in the basic plan. 

The site works on the principle that you should earn your webspace, but it's not hard to get 50 posts.   The other plans require more posts, and that takes a while.  The Advanced Plan is 250 posts, I think. 

All plans come with a subdomain.  For example, my site is http://chaosfactor.zer0host.com .   I personally think this is a great site.  They've had some uptime problems in the last few days, but they were upgrading their servers, so there won't be any problems for a loooooong time.

If you mean having your own server on your own pc or designated server then what you need is apache. Also PHP for PHP pages and for forums and things, you need MySQL (or similar).

And if you had the money and a fairly fast connection, you could have a little computer setup specifically as a web server....

a web server set up on a home server? lol. for anyone in another country your site will crawl for them, downloading files will be tedious and extremely slow (your upload speed would be split between all visitors) so if you have just 5 or 6 people on the site on a 576/256k connection, if 2 or 3 of them were downloading files then they'd get about 10kbs each...

I don't get that many visitors on my site (although it's down now while i'm optimising my PC.)

If you did setup your own PC as a web server, you could use it for sharing a page of photos for your family or something...

im so lazy to check all the posts and view all the serves that you put...

stephen_wq, do you mean a domain for your site?  Well, I had never heard of getting a domain for free.  You will need to pay for that, and you can use that for your free webspace.  A domain doesn't cost a lot.  You can pay as little as a few bucks per month, and you can get whatever you want already.  Think about it.

There are free domain names, but just a lot of the services are either full or have lots of ads.
If anyone can find one or can provide one that would be great!

you are right, if you are saying those domain like .tk that might include ads.  However, for something like .tk, I think they are more like a redirector to me.  What i mean by domain is something like .com, .net, or .org without any ads.  You need to pay for those services.

http://www.brickshelf.com is the same as maj although it is mainly used for Lego purposes. The one difference is that it can have swf's, which is why I use it.

Don't you have any webspace provided by your ISP?  You could always upload it to there and link to it from your domain name.

Example: http://www.f1ngers.org.uk is a domain name I have but all the files are on my webspace from my ISP.

You can get a free .tk domain at http://www.dot.tk/vc00100.html. Do note that this is just the domain name, and that it will redirect you. It is not a hosting provider.

Dot Tk get rid of your domain name if you don't have enough visitors to your site BTW (unless you pay) I recommend http://www.cjb.net it's free and you get .cjb.net after your selected title the only thing is you have to verify that you are still using it after six months (don't worry you get a email telling you when and how).

There's lodes of posts that reccomend HostUltra. I don't because the free account has got alot of popups that can get past your popup blocker. They get annoying.

The actual hosting is good though. Shame about the ads.

many ppl have put hosts here ... some of them are repeated over and over again ... the thread becomes too long and then when a person goes to search then it takes for ever ... can something be done about this ???
And if a host doesnt provide free hosting and it was said so ... then please report it cause i remember that i started to search this thread for a nice host and i could see the same host a few times like ... 100webspace.com and i couldnt end up finding one ... this thread is 16 pages long ....

I just wanted to say something ....
many ppl have put hosts here ... some of them are repeated over and over again ... the thread becomes too long and then when a person goes to search then it takes for ever ... can something be done about this ???
And if a host doesnt provide free hosting and it was said so ... then please report it cause i remember that i started to search this thread for a nice host and i could see the same host a few times like ... 100webspace.com and i couldnt end up finding one ... this thread is 16 pages long ....
