It's WINDOWS messenger 4.7 and MSN messenger 5.0...... (although there were/are early 5.0 version MSN Messengers who say: Windows Messenger; so I've been told.....)

Hi
1. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between these 2 products?
2. Are they fully compatible?
3. I was trying to communicate with a friend. I have the latest version of windows messenger and he has MSN messenger. He has a web cam but I don't. Is it possible for us to have chat on line using the keyboard and for me to be able to see him on his web cam although I do not have one?

Cheers

Greetings Darren,

1.  There are several differences, Most notably, MSN Messenger 6 has support for display pictures, custom emoticons, has a different interface, etc. whereas Windows Messenger supports SIP-based communications services, Exchange IM Server, etc.  Which one you use is up to you, and a matter of personal choice (and based upon your needs and likes), however one thing to keep in mind, Windows Messenger must still be installed on Windows XP in order for MSN Messenger to retain full functionality (Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing, etc.).  MSN Messenger is centered around MSN technologies (Hotmail, MSN Member Profiles, MSN Mobile, etc.) whereas Windows Messenger is centered around Windows technologies (Exchange Server, Office Live Communications Server, Windows Netmeeting, etc.).

2.  They are with some exceptions.  The 'Start Camera' option in Windows Messenger can only be accepted by users running either Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger on Windows XP.  The 'Start Webcam' option in MSN Messenger 6 can be accepted by anyone using any Windows version, but requires MSN Messenger 6 to be the Messenger client being used on both sides.  The 'Start Video Conference' option in MSN Messenger 6 is compatible with both MSN Messenger 6 and Windows Messenger, but requires Windows XP to be the operating system on both sides.

3.  And yes, you do not need to have a Webcam to see him, you just need to follow the rules in the above paragraph.  If he's using Windows XP, and uses the Actions menu--'Start Video Conference' option, you will be able to accept it, otherwise you'll need to download MSN Messenger 6: http://messenger.msn.com/Download

Windows Messenger 5.0 is the same as MSN Messenger 5.0 was...there isn't really many advantages over 4.7 apart from the fact that you'll have the newest version "ooo...I have the newest version"...although I must admit I do tend to try to keep to the latest version...but oh well...

Windows Messenger is part of Windows XP and lets you communicate instantly with co-workers, friends, and family all around the world right from your computer. With Windows Messenger you can communicate using text, voice, and video, and enhance your productivity even more with the ability to share applications or a whiteboard. Windows Messenger gives you control over who you talk to and when by letting you block specific users, view the typing status of buddies, and deciding who adds you to their contact list.

Windows Messenger is the instant messaging client of choice for businesses in managed environments with connectivity to Exchange IM servers and SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) based IM servers, along with connectivity to the MSN Messenger service. Windows Messenger 5.0 is the latest version of Windows Messenger. Windows Messenger 5.0 adds the following new enhancements that let you:

- Send Ink Instant Messages from a Tablet PC.
- Filter out instant messaging spam.
- Turn off Windows Messenger notifications during presentations.

Windows Messenger 5.0 looks pretty much like MSN Messenger 4.6 and Windows Messenger 4.7. It's just the plain old 4.x look. Also, it doesn't support all the fancy MSN Messenger 6.0 thingies (like custom emoticons and display pictures). That's why Windows Messenger outperforms MSN Messenger. It's a to-the-point IM client.

Well, my mistake (not totaly though), seems that only the English version has an update and as I can remember from what I did was also clicking on the english version and when I did that it wasn't there yet... Well, now it is....
As for 4.7 you could d/l some add-ons (also from the MS site) to use some fancy stuff, seems that in 5.0 this stuff is added by default...

As stated in previous post, I didn't know there was a winmsgr 5.0. I checked this before I posted. After I came back to this thread, I checked again, only to see there WAS a winmsgr 5.0. (All explained in previous post, if you read it)
