RE: re-name display pics? by Tochjo on 11-15-2003 at 08:37 PM

Your story is kind of confusing.
Can't you use a CE/DP stealer?

No he means after you have already added tehm as a display pic.. like custonme emoteicon <-- however everyone is spelling it these days lol anyways with emotions you can rename the keys you press to make them show up and change its name like (H) Cool Guy ;CG but as the display pics you cant rename them in the list... and as far as i knwo there isnt anything
RE: re-name display pics? by Tochjo on 11-15-2003 at 08:42 PM

Ah, like that...
This might be a bit farfetched, but can't you go to "Choose display pic", and then click the one you want to rename, make a screenshot, go to Paint and paste it there, edit the screenshot so only the preview is visible and save the preview with your desired name?

RE: re-name display pics? by lylesback2 on 11-15-2003 at 09:41 PM

but that takes so long... i like how they set up custom icons, i think they should do the same with display pics...

RE: re-name display pics? by Sk3tch on 11-15-2003 at 09:56 PM

I agree, i think that they should be set out in a similar way..  the names of the pictures should be stored somewhere, there probably in the 'map' Data File in your User Title where your ConfigCache is.. but its encrypted i think.. :-/ its a shame they haven't replied to you aswell..

RE: re-name display pics? by lylesback2 on 11-15-2003 at 10:31 PM

i e-mailed them again... i hope they add my opinion :)

RE: re-name display pics? by Kareeser on 11-15-2003 at 11:08 PM

Yeah, but it probably took you more time to post this forum topic than to copy the pic again, :P

true, but its the fact that you might want to do this in the Future and its kind of a hassle free situation that were looking for, and changing all the display pics just because of a name that could be changed in the same way as the emoticons are, is just pointless. :-/ thats why it would be easier if you were able to just rename them.
RE: re-name display pics? by bach_m on 11-16-2003 at 12:06 AM

maybe a REs-Hack colud do it? (i havn't tried. anyone know a good program?)

RE: re-name display pics? by lylesback2 on 11-16-2003 at 06:00 PM

my idea made it to MSN :D

quote:
Hello,

Thank you for contacting MSN Messenger Service.

I am writing in response to your inquiry on how you can rename
your display picture in MSN Messenger. Changing the display
picture's name after uploading is not currently available in MSN
Messenger. I suggest that you rename the picture first after
saving it on your computer and then upload it as your display
picture.

However, being able to modify your display picture is a great
idea and would greatly improve our services. I forwarded your
suggestion to the product team, which carefully reviews these
suggestions and considers them for future releases.

Should you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to
write us back.

The directory you're looking for is the same that holds the configcache.xml (obsolete now):

for XP, Win2k, NT:
\Documents and Settings\<windows accountname>\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<your_MSNID_number>
for 9x (with profiles):
\WINDOWS\Profiles\<windows accountname>\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<your_MSNID_number>
for 9x (without profiles):
\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<your_MSNID_number>
in short:
%appdata%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<your_MSNID_number>

In that directory you'll find some subdirectories:

* Backgrounds
you'll find all your backgrounds here.
They're named like TFR<number>.tmp or TFR<number>.dat
but actually they are just JPGs or PNGs with the extension renamed...

* CustomEmoticons
you'll find all your custom emoticons here.
They're named like TFR<number>.tmp or TFR<number>.dat
but actually they are just PNGs with the extension renamed...

EDIT/UPDATE: ...or GIFs when they are animated.

* UserTile
you'll find all your display pictures here.
They're named like TFR<number>.tmp or TFR<number>.dat
but actually they are just PNGs with the extension renamed...

(The renaming: I refered to this a couple of times on the forums already, messenger converts every emoticon or display picture to a PNG... --> also see the threads about animated GIFs in display pictures or custom animated emoticons)

Old thread that mentioned this already:
http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=16...d=149381#pid149381

The info about <your_MSNID_number> can be found again on the forums:
http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=15519
http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=15...d=132217#pid132217

EDIT: NOTE: This post was made back in the time when Windows Live Messenger didn't existed yet. The location of the object storage has changed, although in general the principle about the stuff listed here stays the same...

edit: updated url to new host link

RE: re-name display pics? by slang123 on 11-16-2003 at 07:46 PM

am i right in saying that its no longer .tmp its always .dat ?

RE: re-name display pics? by CookieRevised on 11-16-2003 at 07:49 PM

Yes and no :)

I have .tmp's in the directory, but since I installed 6.1 and added new DP's they are .dat's....
So it seems that .tmp was used in 6.0, and .dat is used in 6.1
(It still reads the .tmp's though, kind-of downwards compatible)
(.dat seems also more logical then .tmp, cause tmp means temporary, and they are not exactly temporary aren't they? :))

Oh, and also here is more info about the encrypted map.dat file:

What if I don't see that directory? I'm looking for the emoticons, but I can't seem to find "application data"
RE: re-name display pics? by CookieRevised on 07-06-2005 at 11:55 AM

It is always there. Without it, MSN Messenger will not function. However it is well possible that the directory is hidden. So, make sure you've enabled "Show hidden files and folders" and disabled "Hide protected system files". To do so, go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab.

RE: re-name display pics? by Astynax on 09-10-2006 at 07:32 AM

CookieRevised, you will need to update your info,

8.1 and future builds will change where this info is stored.

/application data/microsoft/msn messenger is now redundant

the new object data store is
/local settings/application data/microsoft/messenger

Thanks for displaying the locations of all the MSN Messenger items.  Question I have is where is all this on Vista?

I've just installed Xp and last version of Live Messenger on it...

why can I find Messenger objects into the first as in the second folder?

Into the first, I've found a series of .sqm files..what are they?

Into the second, a series of folders with personal pictures, emoticons, etc...ok
RE: re-name display pics? by Naruto-SR on 02-29-2008 at 04:56 PM

sqm stands for Service Quality Monitoring, they are used by Microsoft to help to improve their programs.

RE: re-name display pics? by gaetano_gatto on 02-29-2008 at 05:05 PM

Are they used to provide Shared Folders service, too?

I've heard someone saying that.

RE: re-name display pics? by Naruto-SR on 02-29-2008 at 05:29 PM

The shared folders also generate .sqm files, yes.

RE: re-name display pics? by gaetano_gatto on 02-29-2008 at 05:33 PM

and if I delete these files, what are consequences?

RE: re-name display pics? by Naruto-SR on 02-29-2008 at 05:37 PM

None, the files are 100% safe to delete.
