New plug-in by wtbw and The Blasphemer for windows xp

TROUBLESHOOTING

Since many people are having problems with the MSN Handwriting plugin,
I thought I might be able to help some of them by writing a quick
troubleshooting guide.

First of all, I'd like to apologize for the fact that it took so long
to write this document. Because of some private stuff, I haven't been
able to do very much the past week.

Ok lets get started. Because some people did not get this plugin to
work at all, and it is disturbing MSN, I will first explain how to
un-install it. Most people try uninstalling Messenger Plus, however
this will not work since it will not delete the plugin, and the plugin
will still be there after a re-install.

These are the steps to un-install Msn Handwriting.

1.Stop MSN Messenger completely, or make sure the DLL
  Is not loaded.
2.Browse to X:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2\Plugins\
Where X is the drive you installed windows on.
3.Delete MsnHandWriting.dll, or rename it to something not ending
  on .dll (like MsnHandWriting.bak)
4.Re-start MSN Messenger, or reload your plugins.

=====================================================================

Now we know how to uninstall it, lets take a look at the known problems,
and their possible fixes:
(P is Problem, S is solution)

P: Messenger gives an error "We are unable to start a conversation with ...
, please try again later" everytime i try to start a conversation
S: Make sure the Ink Redistributables are installed! They should be included
with the install package, if not, re-download it from Mess.be or the Plus!
Website. If this does not help, your system might not be able to work
   with Ink messages.

P: If i try to send a message, MSN Immediatly tells me it can not be delivered,
without even displaying the original message
S: There is no solution to this (yet), Once I have time I will try to investigate
it, and find a solution. However it looks like it is a bug in how MSN works
on Tablet PC. I might release a version to allow you to disable ink writing
on specific conversations, but I haven't had enough time to do that yet.

P: When i choose "Convert" nothing seems to happen
S: Convert is something made for tablet PCs, It is supposed to convert your
written text to typed text, however this does not seem to work on normal
   systems.

P: When i click "Handwritten" MSN automatically goes to convert mode.
S: This means your contact can not see Ink messages, thus MSN tries to switch
to convert so it is converted to text. However see the above problem

P: MSN Crashes after re-loading my plugins.
S: Oops! sorry! my mistake! Didn't restore MSN to its original state!
Will fix in the next version

P: My problem is not mentioned here!
S: Mail me! theblasphemer [at] hotmail [dot] com

I hope this document solved most of your problems!

RE: Handwriting Enabler by jaguar110 on 02-29-2004 at 10:09 PM

Love the handwriting plugin!

but i noticed that some MSN Plus! features wouldn't work anymore like the quick icon panel and when i try to type sound commands like /sbrb.

(they work with InfoPen tho...but i'd rather install the plugin than Infopen)

What versions of MSN / Plus and OS are you using?

RE: Handwriting Enabler by jaguar110 on 02-29-2004 at 10:15 PM

Edit: ok never mind, everything works now :D. i just reinstalled the plugin

RE: Handwriting Enabler by bach_m on 02-29-2004 at 10:27 PM

I dont know , it might be possible. But wether its possible or not is not the question. Its should this be possible. I mean this would allow people to flood whole conversations with images and lag msn to crash. It would also allow automated bot advertising and it would ruin conversations too :-/ I wouldnt want it , handwriting is good enough. If you want to share a photo give them the link or send it to them with file transfers
RE: Handwriting Enabler by taktikz on 02-29-2004 at 11:58 PM

Ok i installed the required ink files, installed the plugin, restarted msn but when i try to open a convo window i get an error that says something like "we were unable to open a chat with (user). you might want to try again."

Any ideas? i'm running win98se with the latest msn and plus versions.

RE: Handwriting Enabler by chris on 03-01-2004 at 12:04 AM

it doesnt work on win98 Only On XP

Also has anyone else had CPU Issus with this plugin? it worked just fine for awile then after awile i opend a window with someone and bam my computer like froze almost i got to CTRL ALT DEL and my cpu usage was up to 100% so i closed MSN and it went back to normal i signed back in and it was alright till i would open a conversation it went back up to 100% so i removed that plugin for awile and its just fine now but anyone else have this problme?
Edit: I dont think useing clearMSN would make a do that would it? i know InfoPen didnt work with it so mabey thats it. if u use clear msn leme know if it works all the time for you too

RE: Handwriting Enabler by taktikz on 03-01-2004 at 12:05 AM

oh, that explains everything... thx for the reply.

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Chakotay2003 on 03-01-2004 at 12:23 AM

Thanks~~~no more infopen~~~

RE: Handwriting Enabler by stonesour on 03-01-2004 at 02:42 AM

Suggestion-make it disableable. I have two contacts and if I have infopen or this plugin it freezes up the contact window, and msn. It's only with two contacts though...

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Novex on 03-01-2004 at 11:09 AM

my god that is the absolute most awesome plugin I have ever seen!! :D

Great work guys, wonderful, fantabulous!! (Im still stoked I can draw with people over msn :P )

Just a question though, I see different colours in some screenies, how do we change colours? also is there anyway to clear or erase the drawing board without sending it? :)

RE: Handwriting Enabler by bach_m on 03-01-2004 at 11:57 AM

click the little button next to "backgrounds"

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Novex on 03-01-2004 at 12:48 PM

:o thanks!! :D

I had that panel hidden... I see now :D

yey :P

RE: Handwriting Enabler by V@no on 03-01-2004 at 01:52 PM

Hi!
This is awsome plugin! very usefull!

but I have  some problems:
when I start drawing and in the same time recive a message, the plugin stop working, its just doesnt draw anything anymore...

P.S. for some misterious reason the plugin was working without installing the "ink" thing. but then I tryed install "ink" and reinstall the plugin, but the problem above still remains.

My spec:
Windows XP Pro SP1
Windows Messenger v4.7
MSN Messenger v6.1
Messenger Plus v2.54.74

RE: Handwriting Enabler by dotNorma on 03-01-2004 at 01:56 PM

I dont get the 100% CPU issue or any other bugs. It works fine for me :) Than again it was built in to messenger by the team....it just needed to be enabled.

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Dan on 03-01-2004 at 07:21 PM

How do you uninstall this Handwriting plugin? I've deleted the files and re-installed MSN Messenger, but nothing.. :S

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Gary on 03-01-2004 at 10:59 PM

Very nice plugin, but now I can't see the bottom part of a message window (where it says if someone is typing something or when the last message was sent.) Take a look at the attached screenshot for more details.

RE: Handwriting Enabler by dotNorma on 03-01-2004 at 11:05 PM

Yah , thats true...but you can if you maximize the window. But there is nothing that can be done about that :-/ Its just were the tabs are

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Gary on 03-01-2004 at 11:18 PM

Okay thanks :)

Also, what is the 'Convert' tab between 'Handwrite' and 'Type' for? :)

EDIT: Nevermind figured it out.

How can I remove the 'Convert' tab?

RE: Handwriting Enabler by dotNorma on 03-01-2004 at 11:39 PM

It cant be removed :) Well it cant be removed with code..I dont know if messing with the msn files could do it or not. But you cant do it legally.

RE: Handwriting Enabler by V@no on 03-01-2004 at 11:52 PM

so, what exactly is "Tablet PC" ? is it type of PC or type of hardware that anyone could connect to a PC? can we just install a software/driver that would let us use "Convert" feature?

RE: Handwriting Enabler by lylesback2 on 03-02-2004 at 12:38 AM

if i download the ink stuff off mess.be and it works, why would i download your installer?

Google for Tablet PC, it's like a laptop/palm pilot in the fact that it only has a big monitor where you can use a stylus to move things, click things etc.
RE: Handwriting Enabler by Islander on 03-02-2004 at 04:04 PM

Hello, I have a question/suggestion, but I don't know if any of the developers of this plugin is here, anyway...

I really like the plugin, never thought something like that is possible. Still, I just a few minutes ago opened a window with a friend who was on an old computer at work, I don't know exactly but I assume it's something like Win98 and Windows Messenger 4.
So when I opened the windows I got a message that said

"xxx wurde der Unterhaltung hinzugefügt. Handschrift wird nicht länger unterstützt, da nicht alle Teilnehmer handgeschriebene Nachrichten sehen können. Senden Sie ab jetzt alle Nachrichten in Textformat."

which is something like "The user you talk to can't receive the handwriting messages". Fine until there.
The ugly thing came when I tried to press the handwriting button, it didn't activate, but instead the button for text converting. And soon after, my friend asked me what the hell I just typed. This is what he got:

"Islander hat Ihnen eine handgeschriebene Nachricht gesendet, aber Sie können diese mit Ihrer Version des Messenger nicht lesen.

Wenn Sie handgeschriebene Nachrichten lesen können oder andere neue Funktionen, wie das Austauschen von Hintergründen und Anzeigebildern nutzen möchten, laden Sie die neuste Version"

You don't understand it? Well, nor does he, because he doesn't speak german.

So here is the request... is it possible to deactivate this kind of messages? It's rather odd to send any "internal output" to another user than the one using the plugin. And I am sure this is not a unique case.

Thanks :)

RE: Handwriting Enabler by CookieRevised on 03-02-2004 at 08:47 PM

That messages is NOT internal output, it is very logic and is meant for the contact...

You got a message saying: "use TEXTFORMAT", and yet you insisted in pressing "convert". So MSN Messenger warned your contact that he needs to install "Ink" if he wants to receive your messages.

RE: Handwriting Enabler by aNILEator on 03-02-2004 at 10:56 PM

is it possible to implement this into MSN Handwriting plug-in?

RE: Handwriting Enabler by dotNorma on 03-02-2004 at 11:33 PM

No , I dont beleive so :). But if you will look on mess.be , recently choli created a tool (idea from mnjul) to change the color like that :)

RE: Handwriting Enabler by jmccarroll on 03-03-2004 at 01:29 AM

Is the only way to get the Ink Redistributable through infopen.  What I'm asking is...is there anyway I could get it without having to wait out an 18 MB download.  Or is that even how you get it.  I've been confused about this for the last hour or so.

I pressed the button, but I didn't write/send anything at all, so it does not make much sense. The actual way would be like myself pressing the button for remote assistance on my computer and all my online contacts getting a message saying that they need XP in order to make it work with my connection. They have nothing to do with any button I press, as long as I don't actually send something.

And the plugin assumes everyone on my contact list speaks the same language...

Sorry, I still don't see that function is correctly implemented *-)

RE: Handwriting Enabler by CookieRevised on 03-03-2004 at 12:13 PM

well, it is... :p
and btw, no need to press "convert" at all, unless you're on a TabletPC. "convert" doesn't work on a homecomputer.

I didn't press Convert. It activated Convert by itself after pressing Handwriting. I assume there is no way for the plugin to deactivate the convert button after seeing it's not a TabletPC, right?

As for the output... ok, then it would be cool to make it at least English by default (the message that is sent, that is), or it would be one of the most useless correctly implemented features ever ;)

Anyway to stop the 100% CPU usage when you open certain convo windows?

RE: Handwriting Enabler by vlio on 03-04-2004 at 08:43 PM

Hello!

This plugin is really excellent ! (Y)
But since I installed it, I often have this problem:
I cant send a normal text message, and I receive the message "TEXT could not be sent to all the contacts":S
Then, it takes a long time before I can send a message. In this time, I always can receive messages and send handwritten messages. Does someone have the same problem?

RE: Handwriting Enabler by V@no on 03-04-2004 at 11:03 PM

Its strange, first time I installed this mod, I didnt install the "ink" thingie...and everything worked fine.
then I installed it on another comp (without "ink") and it worked as well.

and today I find in c:/windows/inf/sysoc.inf this line:

code:
TabletPC=tabletoc.dll,TabletSetupProc,Tabletpc.inf,,7
so, it seems XP automaticaly installs it? or maybe its from SP1 (I use the first SP1, 1 year old one, witch I integrated into XP's installation CD)?
RE: Handwriting Enabler by CookieRevised on 03-05-2004 at 01:10 AM

Nope, no such thing here. (Oh and there is no SP2 yet)

RE: Handwriting Enabler by V@no on 03-05-2004 at 01:18 AM

what SP do u use? the "current" one? SP1a ? or the first one?
I know that the "current" one does not install Java Virtual Machine, but mine does...so it might install the tablet pc as well?
little confised here....

RE: Handwriting Enabler by CookieRevised on 03-05-2004 at 01:26 AM

yep, that can be the case, only on Pro...

About the SP's... There is no SP2 yet, everybody uses SP1. It all depends on what fixes and updates you got from the windows update site. Saying you're using SP1 means nothing actually...

RE: RE: Handwriting Enabler by V@no on 03-05-2004 at 01:36 AM

yes, agreed.
I ment by "I'm using SP1" is that I have the "Network installation" that is 133mb (yes, I know it installs only the "needed" stuff). And that why if u downloaded the first release of SP1 it would not be the same as "current" version, even though its still SP1. (the Java VM is the evidence ;))

YES!!! Ive been getting this problem lately its very strange, not to mention annoying! Im not sure why it occurs but it does take a while to get it back, not to mention the fact that Handwriting will get through but normal text wont :(

Im running XP SP1, P4 2.5ghz 512mb ram over a Wireless connection if this helps any devs, or rings a bell with anyone else..

any help is appreciated :)
RE: Handwriting Enabler by CookieRevised on 03-05-2004 at 02:34 PM

Like said before, this is a know issue and it can only be solved by closing and reopening your conversation or even messenger....

May I remind that this plugin uses a function that MSN Messenger for Windows isn't suppose todo, so I'm not surprised that it has some problems....

soooo...
I'm left in the dark here on windows me :(
can someone give me a reason it will not work?
is there plans to try to get this to work on non-xp machines anytime in the future?

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Cusser on 03-06-2004 at 11:33 PM

Anyone got any ideas on how I can send without clicking the send button? I hid it in my client, and I dont really want to re-enable it.

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Unlisted on 03-07-2004 at 12:51 PM

either cntrl-enter or simply enter, depending on how you configured entering linebreaks in a msg...?

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Gary on 03-07-2004 at 03:07 PM

Alt+s

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Interlude on 03-09-2004 at 08:13 AM

Is there a shortcut (keyboard) for switching to the handwriting tab from regular text?  I know that if you're handwriting, you can simply enter text and it'll go to the text window, but I want the opposite.  Thanks

Alright sorry everybody but ive been away at a family members. Now that I'm home ill update the first post to help out abit :)

RE: Handwriting Enabler by V@no on 03-10-2004 at 06:32 AM

another tip that could help someone:
if u get an error message that your buddy can not accept handwriting message, it could be because your buddy is using Windows Messenger, not MSN Messenger. (usualy its easy determine by their avatar, if u see an avatar, then they use MSN)

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Stealth_X on 03-23-2004 at 02:23 PM

Probably a bit late, but this is by far the best plugin I've ever seen!! I love it... [Running it on Win XP Pro SP1 NL]

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Yes-IHaveAQuestion on 04-01-2004 at 02:15 PM

Well it doesn't seem to work for Windows ME I guess...

I run the ink file installer      then installer.exe         and msn messes up by the "unable chat bla bla bla" thing...

There is a file named Setup.exe in the inkredist file that says instamsia.exe can't be found...

RE: Handwriting Enabler by Smethead on 04-01-2004 at 02:29 PM

Yes, it only works for WinXP and Win2K

RE: Handwriting Enabler by CookieRevised on 04-02-2004 at 09:35 AM

Indeed, in the instructions/description it states that it is only for XP, 2000, server 2003... See http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=22276 for troubleshooting for the Handwriting Plugin...

The problem number 2 is very boring!! I was sure that it cames from the handwriting plugin and I tried to uninstall it but I can't.. I will check that but I wanted only say you that it is fucking boring!! "If i try to send a message, MSN Immediatly tells me it can not be delivered,

Goodbye;)
