This week is going to be a busy week in MSN Messenger Land, we bring to you the announcement of MSN Messenger 6.2 ! Only minutes ago Microsoft has changed its internal site to a new layout, after looking around we found out that the layout change is related to the release of MSN Messenger 6.2 ! And best of all we can tell you the exact date of arrival, Thursday, April 08, 2004.

What’s new ? So far we only found a completely updated site, with lots of information, the new version number and the release date, but we will provide more information before you can say IamAMSNMessengerAddict!

Updates:

The new site holds a list of Authorized Users of .NET Messenger Service. The programs in this list are allowed to use the MSN protocol. For now the only allowed client are: MSN Messenger for Windows or Mac , Windows Messenger , MSN TV service , Microsoft TV set-top box , MSN Mobile , Windows Mobile-based devices, including Pocket PC and Smartphone , Windows CE .NET-based devices, including Windows CE .NET 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 , MSN Messenger Connect for Enterprises ( IMlogic , Vayusphere , Akonix ). Programs not listed (like trillian and bots) are considered illegal.

MSN Messenger 6.2 will be available for windows XP, 2000, ME and 98.

The new site will become orange!

Because you're proberly logged in and your language setting isn't the default en-us...

So log out and try again...
Or disable cookies for a while...
Or go directly to http://messenger.msn-int.com/Default.aspx?sim=mes....msn.com?mkt=en-us
RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by BiZaRrE on 03-03-2004 at 10:14 AM

works fine for me:)(Y)
...except it was blank for about 20 seconds, then the actual page came up:P

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by dan1el on 03-03-2004 at 10:15 AM

The authorized users list isn't new at all... http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Authorized.aspx
It's been there since at least October the 16th *-)

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by Mike on 03-03-2004 at 12:01 PM

Well it looks like that Patchou has to work again on MsgPlus! because Microsoft will probably do anything to prevent it running... :(

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by ILuBPaTcHoU on 03-04-2004 at 12:51 PM

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by Johnny_Mac on 03-04-2004 at 01:34 PM

Thats the correct link to the site. Note the download only downloads MSN 6.1 and not 6.2.

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by ThuggishRuggish on 03-04-2004 at 01:48 PM

Hmm, interesting :/

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by dwergs on 03-04-2004 at 05:03 PM

Please note that we didn't post the URL in the Mess.be news because we don't want to flood Microsoft's int-site with visitors which will only make MS more protective of its content.

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by Stigmata on 03-04-2004 at 05:17 PM

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by creamhackered on 03-07-2004 at 02:12 PM

Animated Display Pictures (still unsure whether there will be animated emoticons)

Launch Site renamed "Fun & Games"

Fun & Games adds: Music Exchange (thought to be like the 3° way of sharing music)

Shared Browsing Enabled for MSN Subscribers

MSN Messenger "Connection Troubleshooter" (automatically solve many network connectivity problems)

Animated Display Pictures

nice but gif or mng? :S

i'd like to know :p

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by GiantSpider on 03-07-2004 at 09:12 PM

most probably .gif more commenly used

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by kao on 03-07-2004 at 09:19 PM

M$ are dodgy though so they'll prob use mng to be awkward :P

anyway, im not fussed bout animated DPs, i'm never gonna use it i doubt :undecided: 6.2 will be no major update for me unless they change an amazing amount like the jump fropm 5 to 6 :P

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by KeyStorm on 03-07-2004 at 10:03 PM

It should implement custom animated emoticons for once!

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by bach_m on 03-07-2004 at 10:04 PM

maybe it will.... it dont seem like such a long jump from animated display pics to animated custom emotes

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by KeyStorm on 03-07-2004 at 10:14 PM

I guess it's a big bandwidth jump, because emoticons should arrive instantly. So they'd have to add size and total-size-at-once limitation which may result into a little more dodgy situation than the actual.

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by bach_m on 03-07-2004 at 10:16 PM

u dunno. it takes some time for emotes to display....

at least it does with friends on a slow connection

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by aNILEator on 03-07-2004 at 11:27 PM

yeah i know what you meanthey keep moaning that they can't see it

RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by Wabz on 03-07-2004 at 11:31 PM

I think Animated Display pics will cause major problems !

There gonna have to limit it some way otherwise my internet connection would die!

As for emotions i'd hate to see them animated the custom ones take forever to load anyways!

They actually shouldn't or how much time does this -> take to load ? And this has several frames...
If the file sending was a little bit more cleaner an reliable there shouldn't be many problems to get animated icons through.

A good and MS-alike limtation would be to limit the frame number.
RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by aNILEator on 03-08-2004 at 08:31 AM

what do you recon they would limit it by? 4 frames:p

If there is a limit, it would most likely be the size of the gif / mng
RE: MSN Messenger 6.2 by chungster on 03-11-2004 at 01:38 AM

maybe there wont be a limit just that it ll load all of your emotes at the begining of convo like with display pictures

I doubt that because it could take a long time to load some peoples emotes since you can get alot of them. and if it downlaoded all of them u might not even use any of them and then it would  have to dowload them next time and i dont think peopel would like that.

No, the display pictures, just like the emoticons, start uploading/downloading when they are needed. For display pictures this means, it start downloading (in the background) when you open a convo. For emoticons this means it starts downloading (in the background) when you recieve the message which includes the emoticon. There is no difference....

If the animated display pictures are true (first see, then believe), they will behave like they always did. They start downloading ( in the background) as soon as you open a convo. It just will take longer to download the full animation (in the mean time you can chat like you always could). And because it will take longer, the animation will be choppy at the beginning. Unless they decide to only show the DP whenever it is downloaded fully. But I doubt that....
