Disclaimer - What's it all about? by Dan on 03-06-2004 at 06:11 PM

I have noticed that on some websites, they have a disclaimer. I'm not sure of the entire purpose of it, could anyone tell me in detail please? Thank you.

It all depends on which country you're in. Disclaimers arent valid in the UK for example. They are american invention. You may see some UK sites have them, but that is because their host or origin could be from another country. You'll have to research what you write is legitiment before publishing it.

Origin? You mean they could've been born there?

Origin of the company that own the site or the site itself.

You really need to speak to someone who knows the law inside out on this stuff. Copying or making up a disclaimer means nothing at the end of the day.

True.. but my host is based in the UK, but it's servers in USA. Does that make me able to have a Disclaimer?

RE: Disclaimer - What's it all about? by bach_m on 03-06-2004 at 06:55 PM

the main question to ask is: DO you really need one?

RE: Disclaimer - What's it all about? by Dan on 03-06-2004 at 06:57 PM

My website is blog, and is not up until 18th March, but I think it will be a good idea for security and copyright reasons. So, yes - I would like one :)

I don't think so, but i'm not sure. :P

When you have a blog, you will probally be using some software/script for it. Unless you hace made a complete blogging system yourself ofcourse.

Most blogging systems have there own default ploicies/disclaimer, you can use that one, or one from another website and slightly modify it to your needs :).

RE: Disclaimer - What's it all about? by Dan on 03-06-2004 at 07:35 PM

That's what I meant all along :P But what if the creator of the website I'm copying it from written it themselves? Should I ask permission?

RE: Disclaimer - What's it all about? by Menthix on 03-06-2004 at 07:47 PM

It's never a bad thing to ask permission when copying something.

Anyway, when your text doesn't refer to anything which is owned by the site you copied from it isn't bad to just copy (and modify it) for your own use. With things they own i mean sites/pages/brandnames/trademarks/products and stuff like that, you don't want their stuff to appear in your disclaimer anyway :).
