I just got an private message (yes from you WDZ 
) and after reading it the counter stayed on 1 new message, and all 8 messages are read :/

I don't see anything wrong 
You have 0 Unread message. And the "New" message represents the number of new messages you've got since last visit (quite the same as New Posts)

I pressed ctrl+F5 and after that I closed the windows (that also clears my cache (you can set that )) and there are is still 1 new message, and yesterday it went immediate from 1 ==> 0

I just went to another pc, logged in and still 1 new message
Ok, just was browsing and now it jumped to 0 new messages
