Boss Protection Mode: Not quite stealthy by theloginisbroken on 03-23-2004 at 07:58 PM

In Boss Protection Mode (BPM) when the icon changes it sits in my tray below my clock, but if I put my cursor over it it says that it's MSN Messenger. That means that if I let someone on my computer, they can tell that I have it running and just open it if they feel like it. This sorta partially defeats my purpose in using BPM. Also, if I have MSN locked, I can't go to BPM, the icon sits in the tray, and I have to open it to go into stealth mode :S.

I'm thinking that it would be nice to be able to choose to lock MSN when you go into BPM (an every time option, not a "gee, you're going into stealth, do you want to lock your user?" window).  Also, it would be nice to be able to change what it says in the tray when you go to BPM so that it matches the icon. For example I use an icon from Office that indicates that I have mail. My ideal is for someone to come along, see that, it says "You have 2 e-mail messages waiting", they click it, but it asks for a password.

I'm afraid there's not much to do about it. And I think Patchou noticed that a while ago, too. I think he'd have to crack the original files, which is illegal...

Ok, I'll do you one better, now I can't even use BPM. It inexplicably stopped working just now. It worked this morning, now it doesn't. I haven't installed anythign, all I did since it last worked was play an internet game (subspace). ???

I'm keeping the tooltip so that people can find MSN Messenger easily (people with less experience). Before your boss checks what'S the tooltip, he will probably double click on the icon :).

As for boss protect not working, maybe your game has modified the global shortcuts in Windows.. you can easily check that by exiting Messenger and restarting it, the shortcut will be reinstalled.

Hm...I think I fixed the sound one, it was actually the notifications, though it might be nice to have a "supress all sound" feature (not high priority). Still though, it would be SO nice if BPM and the lock mode could be combined. :)

Yeah, it would be nice to be able to choose to have a different label. Default would be what it currently is. A "suppress all sounds" feature would be nice too.

Can't you disable the "allow the use of sounds" setting?
RE: Boss Protection Mode: Not quite stealthy by theloginisbroken on 03-26-2004 at 03:57 PM

To disable sounds I have to go into TOOLS>OPTIONS>GENERAL and unclick all the little tabs, then go to the sound settings in Plus! and disable all them and then go disable notifications, or the stupid notifications sound will constantly bug me. It would also be nice to customize which notifications are allowed for each contact.

Again, it would be really nice to be able to lock BPM.

Well, I know that the teachers at my school have gotten wise to BPM, so I just switched icons. :D It would be nice to have a locking feature and a switch the tooltip option, but not a huge priority right now. The teachers still haven't figured out the hide system tray icons option in Windows XP. :D

Please, tell me you aren't at school right now as you post.

How about being able to password BPM, so like Instant Lock, only IL doesn't stop MSN being obvious.

Also, BPM sometimes kills my PC. If I lock it, about one time out of ten it'll my PC'll start dying. Check my process list, MSNMSGR.EXE using 98% CPU resources. XP Professional, done it on both SP1 and SP2-RC.

BPM also doesn't work sometimes. I try going into it and it won't go. If I go to the menu and tell it to lock it says that I have to exit Messenger and login again. This is incredibly annoying, esspecially when I REALLY need to use BPM.
