The FBI has made a proposal to the FCC that would require all Internet Providers to rewire their current system in order to make wiretapping accessible to the FBI. Experts claim that if the new proposal were to pass, MSN Messenger, Xbox Live and any voice over Internet protocol would be accessible for wiretapping.

The 85-page filing includes language that could be interpreted as forcing companies to build backdoors into everything from instant messaging and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) programs to Microsoft's Xbox Live game service. New services that do not support a backdoor for the police would become illegal, and companies would be given 15 months to make sure that existing services comply.

It's still a proposal so the FCC still has to decide if they will approve the draft or not. But given the fact that the current Bush administration support eavesdropping, the FCC will take it very seriously.

Depends if it extends outside the US, it might mean that it only requires it within the US so applications for IM e.g. MSN Messenger in the UK wouldnt require the "backdoors". However doing this must create some kind of security risk :dodgy:

did it say anything about the us? anyhow, if the 'FBI' think they and they only would be able to use the 'backdoor' then they are wrong. There l33t hackers out here who would be able to get in any msn pretty quickly, they wud just be exposing us all to peeps gettings in.

FIREWALLS

RE: Great News by Menthix on 04-14-2004 at 01:04 PM

firewalls wont have any affect if tapping takes place at your ISP. You could encrypt your messages, but i believe the FBI knows how most encryption methods work. I remember that PGP got sued because they didn't want to tell FBI how their software worked... so i guess other companies did give that information to avoid problems.

Anyway, you don't have to worry about all this when you're not a criminal. But still... these rules are very wrong... it starts to look like China all over the world :/.
