Translators complaint&request (cuz we deserve it) by nus on 04-27-2004 at 09:53 PM

I don't Know if the other translators have the same problem, but in the Catala Translation Team, and I'm sure that the Spanish (España) translators too, we have the big problem to fit the translated text to the little space that we have.

And with this new version the space it's smaller than before. Patchou (and Guido aka GFD) if you make at next version the buttons more fited to the English text, we must abreviate all text in the buttons (we also have to do it somewhere)

This complaint wants to know what about the other Translation Teams, or we :wall: hit ourselves when we know that we are the only team with that problem.

And .... now the request

Can GFD Design a little image to the translators like:

:plus2: Messenger Plus!
Translator
Nus (Xv)  Code: CAT01
(Cat from Catalan, the number...  every member of the team have a number ...well i put myself the one because it's my idea :d)

We all work a lot and only a few will have a prize. With this everyone have sth. xD

RE: Tranlators complaint&request (cuz we deserve it) by KeyStorm on 04-27-2004 at 09:59 PM

I agree with the design thing, but the number should be omitted (only say wether Team Leader, Translator, Corrector or Tester)

I obviously agree with nus (we're the same team and it's getting more and more difficult to fit text into those small buttons, f.i.)

Well, there's not much to do, despite of having the font shrunk to fit the space in some places.

Edit: maybe design a little "sticker" to put below the user-group-stars with our Translator group/function  (That'd be a nice gift )

RE: Tranlators complaint&request (cuz we deserve it) by Choli on 04-27-2004 at 10:22 PM

I'm from the spanish spain team. We had this problem in plus 2 and now in plus 3 we have it too, however, until now, in the plus 3 translations, we've been able to sumarize/reduce all texts to make them fit into the space. if i can gibe you an advice, don't try to translate directly from english nor find synonims for texts that you can't make fit. Just find another whole new sentence that says something similar.

Of course i agree patchou should make the labels a bit bigger, 'cause sometimes we spend more time thinking of a suitable short translation that fits into the space than really translating.

same problem with the french translation, we have less space, and french needs a lot of words xD but eh, i guess we're here to make the text fit don't we? :)

that's true :D but like apatik said: we're here to make the text fit (H)

Well guys, I have the same problems myself when I write the english text. The room for text windows is often limited and I always have to spend a lot of tiem when I create new windows to find a way to say what I want to say in the available space.

That's part of the translation work! if I increase the size of some windows, you would just realise that you earned 2 or 3 words at most.

Good luck! :)
Patchou

So, you mean, like a self-promotion banner for your sig, etc.? I don't see the practical use, since it can be easily faked anyways... but it would be easy to do ^o)

I like the logo idea, will we be able to use it for other purposes if it's made? (i.e. on website etc.)
When we did the hungarian translation we had the space limit problem but it was manageable, except for one place: the save-load button on preferences. A few pixels are hidden from the usual expression so a rather silly-looking one has to be used. And there is definitely room, by putting the Defaults button a few pixels right. Could you please do this in the MSN6.2 update you promised, Patchou?

RE: Tranlators complaint&request (cuz we deserve it) by KeyStorm on 04-28-2004 at 09:01 PM

So this was the reason why it says "Save/Load" and not "import/Export" :o

That's a good idea too.

That's the original idea

If finally it's made, Guido, could you do it in two formats? One little for the forum and the other one bigger(i.e. for website)?

I like the idea of a user-group-alike icon (like those in Invision). to add it to the Member Card along with each post (dunno what the official name to that piece of userinfo is )

No... actually, it never said Import/export... before it was Backup, I changed it to save/load because I thought it was more intuitive.

Patchou told me so. I reported this as a bug in MP!3, though. None talkes about MP!2 . But I didn't really understand his explanation . He told something about space, but ar they look as links, I didn't realise it very well. Now I understood. ;)

I didn't talk about MP!2 either O_o

What did you report as a bug? :-/

RE: Tranlators complaint&request (cuz we deserve it) by KeyStorm on 04-28-2004 at 09:39 PM

That the button name is "save/load" and the windo opened is called "Import/export".

:blah!: let's stick to the topic, pals ;)

You wanted a couple of pixels in Save/Load ? you have them! :p. And yes, GFD made me change this label... this guy as way too much power over me, I should be careful next time 8-|.

Well... I don't like the way you say this... it seems like that you don't care about the translated version - well at least that you don't care about the work that the translators has.

It might be tough to make the english fit, but anyway the english version _has_ to fit so I guess that it is more 'dynamic'

You have to keep in mind that English is a language which has smaller words, easier to express through few words and and the gramma also makes it easier to write English in short terms and still keep the sentence working.

Translating into Danish is a hard job - especially this time. The Labels are smaller than in Plus! 2 and Danish sometimes needs longer and more words than the original language (English) and as long it is impossible to translate directly we simply have to shorten some words or truncate a part.
Like: "Commands and tags" the translated version is "Kommandoer og mærker" - there are two ways to handle the situation:

* use a short that nobody knows: "Komm og mærker"
* truncate a word and use: "Kommandoer" (leaves the "mærker" behind)

It is possible to use the english word "tag" in Danish - it referse to the grafitti-world and is not that much used in commen language. But even if we use "tag" instead of "mærke" there is not enough space. So the problem is the word "Kommandoer" and as you can see it is almost directly translated - and it is the best translation (actually I cannot find another substitute)... so what to do? use a short nobody knows or truncate a word?

This time you have given us a tough task - I think you should leave some space, or at least try do so in Labes that only contains two or three words, and not make the English version decide the length of the Label.
