(Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by CookieRevised on 04-28-2004 at 08:39 PM

Ok, currently I'm very suspicious about all this fuss about the leaked version which everybody got from the internal site, the retraction by MS, and the rerelease of Messenger 6.2....

Like everybody else, I did download 6.2 when it was first put on the internal site...

Next thing we know, MS retracts this version because there were bugs etc...

So far so good...

Then they did the official release of MSN Messenger 6.2, and I began to wonder:

- First of all, as many have noticed I think, the new 6.2 doesn't have a different build number then the "old" one, it still is 6.2.0133... This is very odd. On every version that MS released or that got leaked there was an update of the buildnumber (like it should).

- Second, I downloaded this new version from various sources (both official as unofficial). I used 3 different browsers with no cache saved what so ever. (furthermore, 1 browser was a freshly new installed one). I downloaded Messenger from a different computer also (which never surfed to any MSN related site, and didn't had Messenger to start with). I also used some download managers. I saved all the files to different names (and directories). I downloaded all the different installers (setup.exe, setupnt.exe setupdl.exe, setup9x.exe).....

The result: Every single file is the same as the old version...

My conclusion: MS never updated/fixed MSN Messenger 6.2.0133

Please proof me wrong:
These are the hashes of the original/unpatched/unskinned "old" msnmsgr.exe (6.2.0133):
MD5: 0cb156820b39708d4a59efcd1a530fbe
MD4: 416b8b5a1d2401ef29e89205b192a72b
SHA1: cfdfabe0674f0a0f57ea3c4dd5683f9b84e5ee07
SHA256: 2f11090227dfc5886cfa8fd62b97ec079430dc28eb2751290f0482e85ba05c97
CRC32: 496c60af
eMule/eDonkey: 416b8b5a1d2401ef29e89205b192a72b

You can check your msnmsgr.exe (original/unpatched/unskinned !!!) with programs like HashCalc or by zipping msnmsgr.exe and read the CRC32 of msnmsgr.exe inside the zip.

PS: It doesn't matter what language you have or what Windows version you have, all the executables are the same.

:O, stupid Microsoft people ~_~.  They should at least give us some sort of information about why there wasnt an update!

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by Kryptonate on 04-28-2004 at 08:48 PM

I thought it too that they didn't changed anything because of the build number (and a lot of others too I guess). I wonder why they didn't change it and just waited a few days to release it while saying they were clearing the bugs :-/.

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by Jordan2004 on 04-28-2004 at 09:15 PM

Could it possibly have been another file that was changed (not the main msnmsgr.exe file)? If another file was updated the MSN Messenger's build number may not have increased.

Possibly something in the installer for setting up the MSN Toolbar / Search had bugs? Unlikely, but possible.

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by weirdal27 on 04-28-2004 at 09:21 PM

i dont think it was leaked...
I think they just pulled it off for some other reason, because wasn't it on the official site for a couple hours as well as the internal site for even longer?
perhaps they suspected an error or a bug in the "leaked" one and pulled it but then found nothing unusuall?

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by Patchou on 04-28-2004 at 10:26 PM

If anything had been changed, the build number would be different, trust me, Microsoft is very serious about that.

So, no, nothing was ever changed :p. Maybe it was just server issues. Still, I agree that it's sad as Messenger 6.2 seems to have even more problems that Messenger 6.1.

So...
You are saying that 6.1 is better than 6.2 althought Microsoft fixed some bugs in 6.1?

No, he's saying 6.1 is more stable than 6.2. Microsoft fixed SOME bugs from 6.1 in 6.2, but in doing so added new ones :S

I am sticking with 6.1. 6.2 isn't worth the trouble ;)

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by ddunk on 04-29-2004 at 04:10 AM

There was a leaked verion on the internal website on about Thursday (maybe) and then they did the release, realized there were some "bugs" and that they were going to "fix" them and re-release it on Monday.

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by Lt.Col.DraGon on 04-29-2004 at 11:25 AM

Really microsoft are really poor people... they didnt update msn 6.2 at all... still 6.2 is sad... they never put this deluxe display pic and stuff and they will never do it. I hope for the next build for msn 6.2 they add the deluxe display pics and the mp3 stuff....

All i have to say is that MSN 6.2 was never updated from Thursday to Monday... Microsoft liars

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by Mnjul on 04-29-2004 at 11:49 AM

I dont think microsoft will ever update it,
they're to lazy...he he
i tried it myself also...no new features...

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by Anubis on 04-29-2004 at 12:05 PM

Perhaps the bug was on the MSN server and wasn't configured for 6.2.0133 and this could cause bugs...So there was no need to release 6.2 until the server was configured fully for 6.2...

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by The One on 04-29-2004 at 12:29 PM

If you checked out mess.be, you would find that a new feature caused a problem with the MSN servers, or they needed updating or something like that... so they pulled it off their site until it was fixed.

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by Menthix on 04-29-2004 at 12:31 PM

No, i just tested the installes, here are the results:

New: Are the installers i downloaded 10 minutes ago, English version from downloaded from http://messenger.msn.com/ (The new so called fixed version of MSN 6.2).
Old: Are the installers i downloaded friday the 23th of april from http://messenger.msn-int.com (The old "leaked" version of MSN 6.2).

en-xp-new: 78bcc464393b87ed900129cc56afac06
en-xp-old: 78bcc464393b87ed900129cc56afac06
en-98-new: c6bb4d00dea375c66f9cffce3fc237e4
en-98-old: c6bb4d00dea375c66f9cffce3fc237e4
en-2k-new: 48526979b9c93ef2ee356920e2e2581c
en-2k-old: 48526979b9c93ef2ee356920e2e2581c

As you can see, all their 3 installers are still exactly the same as the "leaked" version. If you want you can also test it yourself, i have the old "leaked" installers still on my mirror ( http://www.xs4all.nl/~mail2jae/msn/ ). Take a look at the filedate there and you see that those are indeed the old ones.

So indeed, there was nothing changed at all. Like Patchou said it could have just been a server-side change, but why did they uploaded 6.2 to the official messenger.msn.com and the just a few hours later took it away again if it just needed some server changes? Interesting, i already thougth they didn't change anything when i saw it was still the same build and when people reported bugs they had in the "leaked" version too.
Why is something re-released when they already recieved a lot of bug reports in just the few first hours after the "leaked" version became puclic.

Microsoft Watch ( http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,1995,1572366,00.asp ) brougth the news, maybe they can tell us more?

The Dutch site tweakers.net ( http://www.tweakers.net/meuktracker/6004 ) says there was a security problem fixed with animated smiles. No, i'm not saying animated DP's.

quote:

Ofcourse the [i]might[/] have fixed that sever-side, but animated smiles have been in 6.1 too and it seems a bit unlikely they changed the animated smiles code so i wonder why they had to take 6.2 offline.

they also added new features, like the smilies you can see before you send it to your contact, and these have created new bugs. It's not that they made new bugs by correcting the old ones.

It was on the internal site (http://messenger.msn-int.com) but not on http://messenger.msn.com. I checked that site Thursday.

Microsoft never officially announced that they would implement the animated display pictures into 6.2. They also haven't spoken of animated display pictures. The only animated display pictures there are those for the Korean msn messenger with the Messenger Powerplus program.

if they were lazy they wouldn't code Windows, they wouldn't release patches, they wouldn't work on Microsoft related products (e.g. MSN Messenger) and so on. Thats bs.

not every new build has new features, mostly it are just bug fixes or security fixes. 6.2 has new features that 6.1 hadn't like the smilies you can see before you send it to your contact and other minor features.

RE: (Leaked) MSN Messenger 6.2.0133 was never updated by sarkispc on 04-29-2004 at 05:06 PM

I don't think they have updated as well.  I mean, it looks like 6.2 is still not officially publicised.  You go to msn.com and there is no mention of the msn 6.2, you type it in google, and nothing official comes up.  You go to msn.com and click on the messenger button, and it takes you to http://www.msnmessenger-download.com which does not have the 6.2 download file.  You have to manually go to the official site messenger.msn.com to download it.  This all seems very wierd.  Maybe they are still working on another release, who knows.

It's not about looks... A program can perfectly be updated without any change in the look or without any new features...

PS: http://www.msnmessenger-download.com/ does have Messenger 6.2, it all points to the same URL...
