networking help by saralk on 05-24-2004 at 08:59 PM

i have a 4 port broadband networking router, currently i have this set-up

port 1 -> desktop pc
port 2 -> xbox
port 3 -> laptop
port 4 -> empty
wan port -> adsl modem

i want to set-up a wireless network for my laptop, but keep the cabled connection for it so i can switch to cabled when in reach (for speed and reliablity). However i dnt wana spend loads buying a router with wireless bult in, so wot do i have to buy to turn this into a wirless network?

I guess you have to put a Wireless thing (don't know what's it called) on one of those empty ports.

other people make just the wireless base station, sans the router.
Linksys makes one, and i'm sure D-link does as well... maybe a stop in at Target, Best Buy, or whatever the generic-consumer-electronics-superstore is in ur area would help ;)

That would be what you need. Then you'll just have to put it in port 4. Please make sure you use something like WEP to make it at least a *little* secure. You wouldn't want anyone leeching your internet connection, right? :P Oh, and Wireless may sound great, but it's *really* annoying when you can't connect sometimes :-/ (my dad is troubled by this).

so just to clarify, if i got this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.htm...&product_uid=31034

stuck it into port 4, and then also got this

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.htm...&product_uid=33800

and stuck that into my laptop, would that get me online?

thanks in advance

Looks like it would to me

RE: networking help by user2319 on 05-26-2004 at 02:19 PM

probably it would, but check the speeds for both. It's best if these are the same ;) Maybe it might be important that they use the same thing to send/receive?

edit: I mean the same protocol, offcourse! (sowwy)..

EDIT: Post rewritten.

Scroll to the bottom of this page: it has information about how TCP/IP works.

A wireless card and access point will operate at Level 1. Routers and PCs operate at Level 2. Therefore, the two wireless products saralk linked to will work with any protocol that exists.
