Messenger Plus auto-update by provolino77 on 05-29-2004 at 08:31 AM

I'm still using version 2 and I noticed that it's possible to update plus to 3 version using auto-update into the plus about window...
what are the differences between auto-update and stand-alone uninstallation of version 2 and installation of version 3?
what's better?

thanks

there are none. auto-update downloads the installer and then runs it. so it's the same.

does auto-update uninstall plus2 before installing plus3?

I think the installer should first check whether an older version of Plus! is being installed and if so uninstall it and afterwards install the new version.

Indeed the manual install (downloading, executing, installing) is just the same as the auto-update. There is not the slithest difference...
Auto-update just downloads the same setup, and execute it as if you would execute it...

I agree with this....

why? Plus doesn't need to be uninstalled before installing a new version.

You don't need to uninstall Messenger Plus! 2 to install 3...

Indeed, true, but if you don't, you're left with an old Plus! in the old directory if you installed into a new directory....
What I mean is, it would be nice if the installer offered the option to first uninstall the old version if you install the new one into another directory (or at least say it is "recommended" to uninstall first). Because, now many people have Plus!2 in \messenger plus! 2\ and Plus!3 in \messenger plus! 3\ it seems...

(although I must say, when I installed Plus!3 it nicely asked me to install in the Plus! directory, which was \msn messenger\plus!\, it didn't force me to install it in \messenger plus! 3\)

Last question: if I uninstall plus2 and install plus3 will I loose all my preferences?

RE: Messenger Plus auto-update by Kryptonate on 05-30-2004 at 02:37 PM

if you uninstall Plus!, it asks you if you want to keep your preferences.
