Persostat & IdleStatus problem by Sypher on 05-30-2004 at 10:09 PM

Hey,

I've noticed some strange thing... The IdleStatus is overriding the Persostat.

For example, I've set my status to "Not here" or something, Not basic like 'Away' but something I put there in myself.

Then I go away and when I come back I see the status changed back to the persostatus I've set before..

It looks like this:

1) You set the Persostat (and leave)
2) Status changes because of Being Idle for ... minutes (I've set it to BRB)
3) You come back and the status is back at persostat, but what you didn't know is that you weren't Persostatted-Away but Idle away.

Maybe it's only Me having the problem, or I stumbled on a bug..

Either way I hope someone can help me, or that Patchou can fix this.

Thanks

If "Idle"-status overrides a personalised status, then I think that's a good thing.

I don't realy see the problem here. Personalised statusses aren't "Idle"-states or anything. Personalised statusses are statusses (just like the build-in ones) that you can use for other things like an "idle"-state. So, there is a difference there and thus this is where the confussion comes from...

Let me put it in another way: you have "online", "busy", "brb", "appear offline", ..., and then you have some personalised statusses with your own tags. All these statusses, doesn't matter if they are made by yourself (personalised status) or not (build in messenger statusses), they all can be choosen to kick in when you are "Idle".

Messenger has an "idle"-indicator of it's own and this will only set you to the status "away" after X minutes. See tools > options > personal.

Messenger Plus! has also an "idle"-indicator, which will set your status to anything you like (including personalised statusses). This will also kick in after the X minutes. See plus! > preferences > general options > miscellaneous.
(note that the detection of being "idle" that Messenger Plus! uses is somewhat different then that of what Messenger uses.)

Soo you see, "personalised statusses" are just some custom made names for statusses and have nothing to do with the state "idling".

In a schematic it would look like:

You are signed in and your status is:
  online
  busy
  away
  appear offline
  ...etc...
  persostat 1
  persostat 2
  persostat 3
  ...etc...
Messenger detects you're using a full screen app. and can set your status to:
  busy
Messenger detects you as "idling" and can set your status to:
  away
Messenger Plus! detects you as "idling" and can set your status to:
  online
  busy
  away
  appear offline
  ...etc...
  persostat 1
  persostat 2
  persostat 3
  ...etc...

I hope this explaination was suitable for you ;)

PS: Messenger has also a "busy"-indicator, which will set you to the status "busy", if it detects that you're using a full-screen application.
See tools > options > personal.

Well Let's say...I'm away for 2 hours to ... work... I'll put in my persostatus: "Working"

Then I leave and the Idle kicks in at "BRB" (Doh I thought I was Working and not BRB :p)

So I guess it's kinda irritating.. I've never noticed it with Plus!2 ....

That's something else you describe there then what you describes above. But anyways, Messenger Plus!' changes your status nicely after X minutes of being idle. I realy don't see what's the problem is :undecided:

Of course you need to set up your personalised status you like wish in the right way. This means:
* did you uncheck the Messenger-idle-indicator?
* did you check the Messenger Plus!-idle-indicator?
* did you set the correct Messenger status that you like in your personalised status? Non-Plus! users will see this instead of the status-tag "working".
* did you set the correct status-tag that you like for Plus! users to see in your personalised status? (thus "working")

There is nothing irritating about it, if you set it up properly... ;)
Of course, if you set your the status of what Messenger is going to use to "BRB" and you don't fill in a status-tag (for Plus! users too see), then everybody will se "BRB" if you are in a "idling"-state...

Note that "status internal identifier" is just a name your give to the personalised status. It isn't the same as the "status-tag", which is the actual thing that Plus!-users will see instead of the Messenger-status.

hi,

I've been having the same problem as SyPhEr.
I always leave on my pc during the night and set a personal status so my friends know I'm sleeping.
but after 10 min of inactivity the msgplus Idle-status overrides my sleep-status.

that's not what I expect it to do, it should only go idle when I'm in online status.

btw, Nice work Patchou & GDF!

RE: Persostat & IdleStatus problem by CookieRevised on 05-31-2004 at 11:26 AM

That's not a problem, that's a limitation....
If you want it to stay at your personalised "sleep"-status then disable the "Idle"-indentification in Plus! (and Messenger)...

The auto-away (idle) feature is a feature of MSN Messenger itself and there is nothing plus can change about that. If u don't want ur status to change to away(idle) u gotta turn it of Tools > options >personal tab .. uncheck show me as "Away" when i'm inactive for .. mins.

Auto Away features will always override ur current status cuz u tell it to do so (it's whats its supposed to do). Same goes for the auto away in plus.

If u don't want that simply turn it off and choose ur status manually. U want it when not in personalized status? Simply turn that option on again when ur not using personal status ;)

Yes, there is another thread bout this. I posted in it, its this one: http://shoutbox.menthix.net/showthread.php?tid=26353

RE: Persostat & IdleStatus problem by Freaky on 05-31-2004 at 01:38 PM

so it was a bug in MP2? :s

edit:

found the solution, 'tis no bug just a "hidden" option:

HKCU\Software\Patchou\MsgPlus2\your@email.com\Preferences
AutoAwayAlways
dword
1

Boolean value. If false (0), the "change status after x minutes" feature changes the status only when the user is currently Online or Idle.

;)

I have the same problem, and also did not have it with plus 2..

But perhaps a suggestion for the next version / update of plus:
an option to chose whether you want your automatic status change to occur when 'online' only, or to occur no matter what your current status is.

Because i also find it real annoying when it changes my status when i'm already in a (personalised) away. I only want it to work when i walk away and forget to set myself to away, or when my connection is bad, and messenger has to sign in again (and then sets my status to online again)

And i saw that there is some kind of a solution for this problem, but i don't really understand it, and i'd rather just use the options in plus.
