Windows Media Player 10 by GiantSpider on 06-03-2004 at 11:46 AM

Microsoft is preparing to release a public preview of Windows Media Player 10 beta today. The update (due at 12noon EST) will sport the much talked about new GUI and enhancements for portable media players. WMP10 is due to be released later this year and will be included with Windows Media Center 2005.

Testers of Windows Media Center 2005 were treated to an early alpha copy of WMP10 for compatability reasons in the first round beta. Beta 2 of MCE 2005 is set to include the updated WMP10. MCE 2005 Beta 2 is due within 2 weeks.

Nice but a few problems with the taskbar mode...it isn't the same as the full screen mode...There are several bugs with the taskbar mode...

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by GiantSpider on 06-03-2004 at 01:52 PM

It is still in BETA phase you know Anubis. This is just the first public release (not leak).

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by Anubis on 06-03-2004 at 02:10 PM

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by GiantSpider on 06-03-2004 at 03:12 PM

They don't usually let the "public" (as in non-official BETA testers) report stuff.

Why use WMP when you can use Winamp 2.91? It's much smaller, faster and definitely much easier to use.
However, I must admit that I'm guilty of using WMP myself sometimes when I need to play movie files. I guess I could choose DivX player from the 'Open With' list, but heck, that takes longer ;)

Why don't you just set DivX player as your default player for .avi, .mpeg and .mpg files?...

You are aware there's a Winamp version 5.03 aren't you?
RE: Windows Media Player 10 by GiantSpider on 06-03-2004 at 03:26 PM

Guilty. It's not that you have to feel guilty about.

I guess I could to that. But I don't really mind using WMP for video as long as it plays the file properly, but it certainly does seem rediculos to use such a large program just to play songs.

Yeah, I'm also aware that it takes a few seconds longer to load. :^)

I hardly notice the load time between Winamp 2.xx and Winamp 5.xx

Moved over to Winamp5 just after they released it, and never regretted doing so.

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by lhunath on 06-03-2004 at 04:34 PM

Winamp 3 was a deception, but 5 was a great release..

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by Maniac on 06-03-2004 at 04:46 PM

I downloaded the beta yesterday, i didn't like it and went back to 9, looks much better

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by lhunath on 06-03-2004 at 05:08 PM

Hmm, bluddy thing only works in XP, I've got 2003..
* lhunath tries compatibility mode..
blast it. It's too damn clever.

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by Millenium_edition on 06-03-2004 at 05:14 PM

winamp 5.03 takes ages on this pc. sorry, but 2.91 is definately the best release so far. not in a matter of features, just the speed and smoothness - that was my reason to switch over to winamp ;)

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by aNILEator on 06-03-2004 at 05:36 PM

yeah i've reported that to them

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by reisyboy on 06-03-2004 at 06:17 PM

Anyone do use WinAMP users some nice screenies of what WMP10 is like :), i will say though - if microsoft wanted it kept private beta tests they wouldnt allow hot linking of their download, you are downloading direct from micosoft, they could easyly stop it if they wanted to..... i guess they are not to fussed.

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by musicalmidget on 06-03-2004 at 07:30 PM

Well, as always it looks nice, but is it really any good?  Windows Media Player needs an uninstaller for XP before I even consider it, that's why I didn't bother using WMP 9.  If it has an uninstaller I'll probably give it a try, otherwise, I won't. :-/

Well there's a direct link on the Microsoft WMP site so I think they want people to download it...
RE: Windows Media Player 10 by Nemesis on 06-03-2004 at 07:43 PM

All plugins make that box. At least, my WMP and Blogging plugin do. Also, I can't use minimode with it that well... The playback options are greyed out, and when you hover over the windows icon thing the box fading in telling what you are playing doesn't appear. You have to click all of the options in the "v" button to make them work, and when they do, an annoying box appears with a seeker bar in it, and when you go out of mini-bar mode, the music stops.

I am running Windows XP and Media player version 10.00.00.3473

What can I do?

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by GiantSpider on 06-03-2004 at 07:46 PM

Well it's like SP2. Yeah it's BETA. Download it at your own risk.

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by Guido on 06-03-2004 at 08:02 PM

Reisy: MS released this as a public preview, they allow hotlinking because they uploaded it to their site for everyone to download it.

Private betas have private links

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by Phrive on 06-04-2004 at 10:03 AM

It's cased by the plug in's you have..........i think they are planin a new method to show the plugin's runnin, so if you have a WMP 9 or < then you will probably see that. :D

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by aNILEator on 06-04-2004 at 01:08 PM

ooo new symbols by the way i noticed that it has the online store thing and it has napster on there, which got me thinking 'is there anyway we could edit/customize these?'

how cool would it be to have your default Peer-2-Peer program in your WMP

* aNILEator drools over thought of K-Lite Tab in WMP

I bet you 2. I hate that WMP needs system restore. I'm going to kill Microsoft. Anyways, I'm waiting 'til the final release. And FYI, I use Winamp 5.03a and WMP 9.[Image: woot.gif]

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by lopardo on 06-21-2004 at 04:15 AM

:blah!: Winamp rules!! I use Winamp v5.03, it's the same than Winamp 2 if you don't use the "modern" skins, I don't know why you say it takes longer...

RE: Windows Media Player 10 by leito on 06-21-2004 at 04:54 AM

Nothing really new, just some changes in UI and.... the Online Store thingy, then....  the.. playlist... the equalizer and many things, are just as WMP9, here is a Screenshot just for those who would like to see it.
