Plus! sponsor installed for no reason :\ by Shadows_death69 on 06-03-2004 at 07:42 PM

Alright, this isn't for a tutorial on how to get rid of the sponsor I know how to and thats that. I've been part of the community of messenger plus! for a year now and today I installed the newer version of messenger plus! making sure to
click the I refuse.... button on the sponsor screen, althought when a messenger plus! website is opened to say that is has been succesfully installed  theres a toolbar on the internet explorer window :|. i'm not mad or anything. I just don't like the fact that it installed a tool bar.

RE: Plus! sponsor installed for no reason :\ by Shadows_death69 on 06-03-2004 at 07:49 PM

Jackass, it wasn't auto update :dodgy: I dunno why it happened.

I've never had this trouble with auto-update. And I trust Patchou enough when he says that it will not install unless you select to do so...three possible situations spring to mind...
1) Your finger slipped, you dragged onto the other option as you clicked next or you accidentally installed it...
2) The toolbar is from some ad-ware that's buried into your comp...
3) There is some kind of bug in the Plus! installer...

Thank you for posting so micely Shadows_death69 :). I can assure you that clickon I refuse doesn't install the sponsor (I've done it 5 times a day in the past three weeks while testing :p. As you know, you just have to uninstall Plus! to get rid of it anyway, let me know if you get the same problem after you reinstall.

another more:
4) the sponsor was already installed from a previous installation (not probable, i know, you'd noticed it before, but that's another option anyway.)

you should know that that doesn't happen...

the only way of installing the sponsor without the user being notified about it is using the /SilentInstall command and that NEVER happens in an autoupdate NOR in a usual download-save-double-click on the file :)
RE: Plus! sponsor installed for no reason :\ by Shadows_death69 on 06-04-2004 at 01:33 AM

Thanks for the help, I know how to uninstall it now so I think I'll be fine it might be some kind of adware from something buried in my computer as Anubis said, but I'm not really that sure. I'll run a scan on ad-aware and I'll post if it happens again.

Edit: It must of been some other adware on my computer that made the toolbar install, after reinstalling messenger plus! Its gone and just to prove to you, I took a screen shot :p. For some reason the image doesn't show up for me, if it does for you could you tell me? If it doesn't show up heres a link

lol.. actually, I wanted to do that in Plus! 3... automatically take a screenshot at the installation step and put it in the Plus directory for people who insist they never saw the option. I abandoned the idea to avoid other critics :p.

Shame that you didn't do this...I can just imagine saying to some guy who installed the sponsor program and goes ranting on about how you're a greedy programmer that puts spyware in his programs, 'er open this file before you continue to rant on...'C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3\sponsor_install.jpg' That'd be sweet...I like the idea and I don't think many people on the forum wouldn't like the idea...
RE: Plus! sponsor installed for no reason :\ by Choli on 06-04-2004 at 09:25 AM

a screen shot of the setup just when the user click "install"?? that'd be great!! :P

I can't think in any critic..

It's a brilliant idea, but I understand your point about the critics... people would probably be quite surprised to find a screenshot of their personal desktop/windows in the folder of your program... :p

RE: Plus! sponsor installed for no reason :\ by Vilkku on 06-04-2004 at 01:57 PM

You could make it so that it would only screenshot the Plus! installer window (=the active window). The shortcut for that is Alt-Prt Scr.

RE: Plus! sponsor installed for no reason :\ by Shadows_death69 on 06-04-2004 at 03:54 PM

Vilkku, I think thats what he was going  to do anyways. Its quite simple I would think and its a good idea :p.

Nah, that wouldn't be as good, because unless the user had some unique Windows theme, the installer would look the same as it does on many other computers. The whole point is to prove to the user that the option was presented on his/her own PC.

A suggestion for the sponsor install window:

Undo the all caps ACCEPT.  People see that, and will sometimes be "auto directed" by the brain, to click on it.

Maybe to look like this:

I accept.  Install the SPONSOR program.
I do not accept.  Do not install the SPONSOR program.

And the title of the sponsor window should use a bigger font....or, if they do choose to install it, a popup window comes up to Confirm the installation???  (in that case, if they selected NO to the popup confirmation, the "I do not accept" selection would change automatically)

I know, pleasing everyone all the time is impossible, but maybe, with the knowledge gained from multiple posts of "ooooooops, I did it again", may be minimized by people being able to see the word Sponsor more effectively.
