16 seconds to show the menu by Weyzza on 06-04-2004 at 11:23 PM

I don't know what causes this problem.

If I right-click a file or folder to see the menu, it takes 16 seconds to show the menu.
But it's okay (fast) at the second try after the first 16-second right click.

I had scanned my computer for spyware and viruses.
I even had done the scan disk dan disk defragmenter.
But none of them worked :-/

RE: 16 seconds to show the menu by Choli on 06-04-2004 at 11:35 PM

That's nothing worng. The explorer need that time to load all the items in the menu (let me guess: you have winzip items, maybe winrar too, a virus scanner entry, etc..., right?). Once it has loaded the items (and icons) the next times if just uses the loaded ones, and that's faster.

Don't worry about that.

Thanks, Choli.
But it wasn't like that in the past :(
Here's the scrshot of my menu.
Nothing's special :-/

How many icons do you have in your system tray (beside your clock)

Also press CTRL+ALT+DEL and how many processes are running?

Its not healthy to have 4 rows of programs you never use you keep them because "I might use 'em one day" too :P

Jesus, never ever had that many before! Maybe that 16 seconds is your processor taking a breather!

Nah im only messin, have you tried reinstalling windows over the top with all settings etc intact, usually does the job for me, like wen my start menu was taking over a minute to open :), after the reinstall all was fine.

RE: 16 seconds to show the menu by Weyzza on 06-05-2004 at 12:29 AM

Well, I'm thinking to reinstall Windows now.
That should fix everything :).
But I'm not sure how to reinstall it.
Maybe I should open a new thread :p.

I was going to ask that. There may be some processes taking a lot of CPU time.

do you need all them being running? You should start them when needed and stop them when you finish working with them.

I don't like that. Some settings are usually lost and some programs won't work after the reinstall and you have to install them again.

A clean installation is always better.

I got 38 processes running (including the Winblows ones), and mine loads on the fly.
So theres no reason to keep ending processes ;)

But then you need to compare systems.
Your computer may be faster and have more ram then thekid's computer
RE: 16 seconds to show the menu by kao on 06-05-2004 at 09:50 PM

if its Win XP, on the left bar thing, click on "Details" to hide the info about the file and then try, because for some reason, when i right click on mpeg/avi files sometimes it lags like hell (cpu @ 1996MHz, 768 DDR Ram) so i hide the details then click and tis fine.

i have 33 processes running, none are crap i dont want :p

Don't know.
But those are "processes that Windows need to be run" :dodgy:
I have 4 svchost.exe in the Task Manager.

* Weyzza slaps svchost.exe around a bit with a large trout.

I have 512 DDRAM. In the past, sometimes I had more than 35 processes running, but it was fine.

That is normal, svchost is a system process. What are all the others you have? the amount of mem they are using, and what is your CPU % at?

I thought that the 34 meant the munber of icons in the system tray.

34 running processes, including the system ones is right.

your screen shot of the task manager seems right (sistem idle process -> 99% cpu (Y))

RE: 16 seconds to show the menu by matty on 06-05-2004 at 11:54 PM

Are you using both McAffe and Norton?

RE: 16 seconds to show the menu by Weyzza on 06-06-2004 at 07:09 AM

Just Norton

RE: 16 seconds to show the menu by reisyboy on 06-06-2004 at 08:21 AM

Norton i have found from past experience to be rather chunky with resource. Try disabling the active scanning , so it doesnt scan you pc all the time just when you telll it to or the schedual does. Worked for me.......it used to drag the pc right down.

RE: 16 seconds to show the menu by Mike on 06-06-2004 at 08:48 AM

I have 59 processes running.
Beat ya all :refuck:
