Well the downside is I usually put the (! tags in the middle of the paragraph

It should still work though. Take the quick icons panel for example, the panel will still popup if you type "(" in the middle of a paragraph.

Very Good Idea
And Say You Put (!V All the (!V's should come up (for example (!VOT) and (!VET)) so when you type (!VO (!VOT should come up.
Did that make sense?
