Changing Japanese to &#----- by bloodymarvelous on 06-17-2004 at 04:52 AM

I've come across a bit of a problem. How do I change the Japanese characters to entities? I'm using Dreamweaver, (a respectable html editor I think) but I can't find how to do it anywhere... help please :$

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Patchou on 06-17-2004 at 05:23 AM

Yeah, please help him.. many of you have done it already for the msgplus.net translation and I can't sleep well knowing there is no Nippon version of the site :)

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Gonçalo F. on 06-17-2004 at 05:37 AM

i've used http://www.editplus.com to do that. it's very user friendly and easy to use, but i don't know if it's compatible with japanese characters. but still worth of trying (Y)

Ok, got that one. How do I save the file so that all the Japanese characters are changed to code?

I tried changing ANSI to entities, but no changes...

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Mnjul on 06-17-2004 at 09:49 AM

This is what I did in Dreamweaver:

(The name of the buttons...etc may not be accurate as I'm using a Chinese one)

There is a screenshot attached, please click here.

1. Open a new html file.
2. Change the meta charset to iso-8859-1 first.
3. Click "split" button (between "source" and "design", on the left of the title of the html page). You'll see your working area split to: Upper the source code, down the actual visual stuff.
4. Type your Japanese characters in the visual stuff area.
5. You will see the converted corresponding &#xxxxx; codes in the source code area :)

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by bloodymarvelous on 06-18-2004 at 09:03 AM

It was a good suggestion, but the moment I change the page settings to iso-8859-1, it converts my Japanese characters to Ascii characters.

I don't understand why Japanese isn't compatible with .php though... I tested the page with the Japanese Shift-JIS settings and it works perfectly.

$LANG_charset="Shift_JIS";

I only have Internet Explorer, and am running on a Japanese computer, but I think it'd probably be the same for everyone.

Try this page, if you have any problems with it please let me know. Otherwise I think it should be good to go the way it is now.

It looks good in FireFox 0.9 (can't read Japanese though). Only in the titlebar it says "Messenger Plus! | XXXXXXXXXX". Those X's look like squares.

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Mnjul on 06-18-2004 at 01:05 PM

The page loads fine. According to my Japanese Katakana knowledge, those Japanese characters seem to show correctly :)

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by CookieRevised on 06-18-2004 at 05:49 PM

although it shows up "good", it realy shouldn't be used like that though

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Mnjul on 06-18-2004 at 07:01 PM

Well yep, still the entities have to be used...

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Patchou on 06-26-2004 at 03:23 PM

I hope I'll get this file soon :)

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by bloodymarvelous on 06-26-2004 at 04:09 PM

I would like the other translators to give me a hand with this one.
Maybe Mnjul can convert the file to entities? Your help in getting the Japanese version online would be greatly appreciated.

The translated file is on the server (translators will know how to get to it).

I'm sure Patchou will love you all the more for it as well I'm sure :)

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Mnjul on 06-26-2004 at 04:48 PM

Hello bloodymarvelous,

I have converted all the Japanese characters to the HTML entities. Again, "according to" my Katakana knowledge, the characters seem to show properly :)
The new file has been uploaded (so you still have to send it to Patchou). I renamed the old one in case you need it :)

Now we'll finally have Patchou's beloved Nippppppon language :P

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Patchou on 06-27-2004 at 05:30 AM

yeah!
...waiting for the file :)

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by bloodymarvelous on 06-27-2004 at 08:22 AM

It's underway :)

We, the Japanese translators, and especially Age Project. who did this particular translation, will be happy to see this online as well...

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by bloodymarvelous on 06-29-2004 at 08:16 AM

Sorry to say, I can't find the entitified (if that's a word) file. Where did you store it?

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Mnjul on 06-29-2004 at 08:48 AM

Server/Username/Password: In the latest english template (in the mail Patchou sent to us around June 13~June 14)
Directory: Lang, of course

You'll see a jp.php and a mnjul_old_jp.php :)

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Patchou on 06-29-2004 at 04:13 PM

Mnjul, the page on the translator server looks fine however, bloodymarvelous sent me a MBCS file, not the file with html codes. Can you send him the file again? He'll need it to do a couple of fixes (and I need it to upload it on the server).

Thanks,
Patchou

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by bloodymarvelous on 06-29-2004 at 07:14 PM

Hi Mnjul, could you perhaps send me the file over email to:

webmaster at theforeigner-japan.com?

Patchou, what kind of changes do I need to make? Cuz I can't work with the html codes...

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Patchou on 06-30-2004 at 12:08 AM

I've seen two things: "Size:" is not translated and the italic text displayed about the screenshots being in english is on two lines (it should be on a single line).

I just need those two things to be fixed and I'll put the language live :)
Patch

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by bloodymarvelous on 06-30-2004 at 06:15 AM

I think I passed the wrong file on to you. I don't have the login info anymore for the new ftp location. It's probably still in the header of the file Age Project. translated, and Mnjul converted. If I remember correctly everything has already been fixed in that file.

Perhaps Mnjul, you could send the Japanese file to Patchou directly? Cut out the middle man so to speak ;)

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Mnjul on 06-30-2004 at 07:41 AM

No...I see the converted file have two values untranslated (Size and FAQ), I'll mail you about it, bloodymarvelous :)

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by bloodymarvelous on 06-30-2004 at 08:00 AM

Thanks Mnjul, owe you one :D

I sent you the corrected file. Hope all will be well.

RE: Changing Japanese to &#----- by Mnjul on 06-30-2004 at 08:10 AM

Coverted...uploaded...working fine...I'm gonna send it to Patchou ;)
