Quick Icons unavailable by justinp on 06-17-2004 at 05:22 PM

I just upgraded to 3.01.94 and the quick icons checkbox is greyed out, what gives?

Thanks

Justin

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by Tochjo on 06-17-2004 at 05:23 PM

When you mean grayed out, do you mean in the Preferences?
The quick icons panel is not available on Windows Messenger.

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by justinp on 06-17-2004 at 05:25 PM

Yes, I mean in preferences, and yes, I am running Windows Messenger.

Why isn't it available in this version, it was in the last?

Thanks

Justin

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by Millenium_edition on 06-18-2004 at 12:21 PM

because windows messengr doesn't support CE's?

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by justinp on 06-18-2004 at 04:32 PM

It doesn't see to be Windows Messenger as it worked fine in all previous versions of Plus!

I guess I'll open it in the bug forum and see where it goes.

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by Sabersoul on 06-20-2004 at 01:58 AM

I've got the same problem.  Running WinXP SP1, MsgPlus 3.01.94 and Windows Messenger 5.0.0482.  They worked fine in 2.x, but now are greyed out in 3.  I've already uninstalled and reinstall MsgPlus and Windows Messenger without any luck.  Can we get this moved over to the bugs forum?

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by matty on 06-20-2004 at 03:10 AM

Ok as Millenium_Edition said Windows Messenger does not support Custom Emoticons, thus there is no need for a feature to be enabled in an app if you cant use it. The quick icons i think still should work but here is something you can try.

Click Start > Click Run > type in regedit.

Click the + Beside HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Click the + Beside Software
Click the + Beside Patchou
Click the + Beside MsgPlus2
Click the + Beside <Your Email>
Click on Preferences
Double click UserQuickIcons and change the value from 0 to 1. Shutdown Messenger and reopen it.

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by Sabersoul on 06-20-2004 at 03:34 AM

Ahh, that registry key didn't exist originally on my system after installing.  I added the key, closed messenger and msgplus, restarted msgplus and messenger, still nothing.

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by RichieM on 06-20-2004 at 10:33 PM

Same here. Running Windows XP and latest version of Msgplus. Registry settings were already correctly set (I presume the registry key is in fact "UseQuickIcons".

The screen window is attached. Registry settings are below (except security logging key, for obvious reasons! ;))

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by matty on 06-21-2004 at 01:12 AM

Just tested this, Quick Panel is only available in MSN Messenger 6.x and above. I think the reason for this is because Windows Messenger versions do not allow you to have custom emoticons, so you dont need a window that will popup giving you the options of using them.

Can we confirm that we're talking about the same thing here? I might be embarrassing myself otherwise.

The "quick icons" I'm referring to are those that appear once a "(" is typed (without quotes).

If this is not what's being referred to, please let me know so I don't waste anyone else's time.

However, if it is, then I may disagree with the statement above. Quick icons (as I currently see it) worked with version 2.xx of Msgplus, when using Windows Messenger.

Matty, please come back to me if needs be. Anyone else with any hints?

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by matty on 06-21-2004 at 03:11 PM

I beta tested Plus!3 and it never was enabled on Windows Messenger Versions, and yes I am talking about the Icon Panel that pops up when you press (.

The icons that are visible in that Windows are ment for MSN Messenger not Windows Messenger. I have spoken to patchou about a lot of the features that dont work and his reply was... (Not quote for quote) Most of my users use MSN Messenger. Why spend extra time making all my features backwards compatible. (Now when I spoke with Patchou it was awihle back so I don't remember exactly what he said, but it was along those lines.)

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by Patchou on 06-21-2004 at 04:29 PM

For space reasons, the Quick Icons panel is now available on MSN Messenger 6.0 and above only. I had to do this sacrifice to save some kilobytes in the setup package.

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by Thoemmi on 06-29-2004 at 03:40 PM

I'm not satisfied with this answer. I'm stuck to Windows Messenger, since I'm using Outlook Express and SIP Communications Service. I'm very used to the Quick Icon Panel, so I don't have to remember the exact characters for a specific emoticon.

I would really like to see it enabled in Windows Messenger again. It's never a good idea to drawback features users are used to.

Just my $.02.

Regards,
Thömmi

If thats the way you feel, then use Messenger Plus! 2.5
Why would Patchou keep a feature for Windows Messenger when most of the users use MSN Messenger 6?

I've got to agree with you here.  I have to use Windows Messenger because of Exchange Messaging.  I can understand leaving it out of the installer to save space since most people do use MSN Messenger, but at least post it as a seperate package that those of us still using Windows Messenger can enable the feature that we were used to.
RE: Quick Icons unavailable by justinp on 07-02-2004 at 03:19 PM

Same here.  I think there is more of a WM 5.0 base than people realise, with the release of Microsoft's Live Communications Server many corporates are begining a rollout of the SIP client - which can only be found in WM 5.0.

PatchOU, please give us the option to download a package that supports all the features under WM 5.0

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by Patchou on 07-02-2004 at 04:24 PM

I'm sorry about that guys but right now, I don't plan on making a compatibility patch for Windows Messenger and the quick Icons panel. I'm counting on Microsoft to release a Windows Messenger 6.0 soon :). If they don't, I'll probably have to take the time to add the necessary code to Plus!.

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by justinp on 07-02-2004 at 04:29 PM

Sorry to break the news...next WM client is not scheduled until H1 2005 :(

Can I still download 2.5 from somewhere?

The link above to MsgPlus 2.54 appears to be dead. Does anyone else have a link to it?

RE: Quick Icons unavailable by Guido on 07-12-2004 at 07:04 PM

Just out of curiosity, how much space does it save Patch? :-/
