If you plan on playing current of future games don't.  If gaming isn't your cup of tea then yea, go for it.

ps: Should be posted in Tech Talk.

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/index.html

Read all about it there.  Put simply it is a Budget Direct X 8.1 card, so not really capable of DX9 games & only okay at DX 8.1 games.

are there ne (cheap:P) graphics cards that u would recommend that would be capable of playing modern and future games??

EDIT: Also do i actually need 256MB or is 128MB enough (beware i am a serious gamer:D)

9600XT, 9700 Pro, 9800 Pro, 5900XT, 5700 Ultra  all dropping in price and all capable of holding their own for a while.  At the moment 128MB is pretty much same performance wise if not better than most 256MB cards.

i have an ATI Radeon 9200 256MB AGPx8 Graphics Card and it works fine with all my games, most of which are new. for example
-colin mcrae 4
-fifa 2004
-harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban
-need for speed underground
and quite a few other games that came out this year.

Best card ever was the ATI Radeon 9500PRO, It was a dumbed down version of the 9700PRO, but you could overclock it to all high hell and soft mod it to a 9700 pro. there were also hardware mods to make it a 9700 PRO :-D

If you have the money, stray away from GeForce and stay with ATI Radeon. ATI just released its brand new 256 mb video card at E3 this year, and if you have about $300 or $400 USD laying around, and you are a serious gammer, then that's your card right there. Otherwise, Try to buy a non-AGP ATI card, 128 mb or 256 mb, which start at about $250 Canadian for a good 128mb one.

If you want to buy nVidia it is up to you.  I would avoid PCIe until it becomes more widespread.  The X800 (which Halo nutter) is mentioning is a good card, but don't believe benchmarks.  ATi are in the docks for using tweaks that are against fairness.

For games around now while keeping to a SENSIBLE budget a 9700 Pro is probably your best bet, altho 5900XT's are not to be sniffed at either.  Also, those games aren't the most taxing around.  Try runing  Far Cry at 1024x768 or even Painkiller at the same resolution and see how they stumble.  Far Cry & Painkiller are True DX 9 games and are current engine builds.
